Tweets by me from November 2022: What Elon Musk is doing to Twitter is a very good illustration of why the existence of billionaires is a threat to democracy. For better or worse, Twitter is essential communication infrastructure for hundreds of millions of people. It's verification system (RIP) made it a trusted means of communications for governments, the media and civil society around the world. Twitter has always been the most democratic platform, allowing for marginalized groups to communicate with the powerful without the mediation of FB's algorithm. The dismantling of Twitter and is a blow to democracy. It should not have been possible for this kind of wanton destruction of important community infrastructure based on the uncontrolled impulses of a single man. But that's what allowing individuals to amass that kind of wealth has done.
