On Misunderstanding the Poverty of the Stimulus Argument The Poverty of the Stimulus Argument is not (really) an argument, and usage-based approaches reliant on LLMs to refute it are weakened.

such a great summary of what "poverty of the stimulus" means and the kicker:

> That the model, training within a restricted hypothesis space, requires as much data as it does is an indictment of the commonsense view of the POSA and the usage-based response via LLMs.

I don't love that some high-paid, public-facing careers essentially have no standards attached to what they do other than "never acknowledge mistakes or limitations."

i think this could have been a lot more fun if it was samples of haskell code written by people vs those written by claude. to make it the same, you have to take haskell code written by *really good* but very distinctive* haskellers.

but we associated this with republicans most -- now this was democrats!

when we talk about the difference between Europe and here, this is part of it. Europe has protected their working class better, not perfectly but better. american "elites" are purely hostile towards those who keep the lights on

similarly, like most of my unionized brothers and sisters, when clinton signed nafta i took it as the government issuing the final death blow to unionized labor. the government was always hostile to unions; we have a long history of violent strikebreaking.

Rising Immigration Has Helped Cool an Overheated Labor Market The United States has experienced a substantial influx of immigrants over the past two years. In 2023, net international migration surpassed its pre-pandemic peak. This flow of immigrant workers has a...

for instance if i tell you my working class neighbors think (illegal) immigration lowers wages for the bottom tiers of the working class, you will say they are dumb. but plenty of educated professionals also know there is some truth to it.

"educated professionals" are plenty dumb about a lot of stuff, and the "dumb" people they laugh at are quite smart about some things, just things the "smart people" don't happen to care about. only being smart in the approved ways counts for anything. it's a significant problem with the culture.

mulch is a very fraught subject here, because too often it just creates more habitat for the vile, garden-devouring slugs

when i have people over, i try to accommodate their preferences, no matter how much trouble it is, but you can't really do it at a thing like this because there are many different families with their own peculiarities. nevertheless i have spent all morning considering my obligations as Snack Mom.

anyway i have snack duty for the 4-H meeting tonight and i made sourdough chocolate chip cookies -- they have a little sugar, and they are not gluten free, so some children will not be allowed to have them, and no one will understand the connection between that and their felt "lack of community"

09.03.2026 17:48 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

i am aware of food-pickiness trends of my community so when i am going to have someone over or take food to an event i generally will avoid seed oils, food dyes, etc but then someone comes over who won't let her kids eat *any* sugar -- except honey or maple syrup which is "not sugar" ok sure

proud to have raised two children who will eat any food given to them, with joy and gratitude, as it should be. my younger son still doesn't like raw tomatoes, but he'll eat around them without saying a single word about it.

hospitality isn't only a matter of obligations for the host; the guest also must be appropriately responsive to hospitality. one reason it has become impossible these days to be casually hospitable is no one can be relied upon to eat whatever food is given to them.

last night when i went to bed, i was tired and i was also sleepy. i had exercised and been out in the sunshine during the day. i had not been looking at my phone near bedtime. &c.

yet i did not fall asleep. at all. all night.

how does this happen? how can my body simply fail to do this thing?

i have lived in Great Falls, and believe me, it is eastern Montana

03.03.2026 21:58 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

this is so messed up. the only correct answer to where "eastern Montana" starts is the Rocky Mountain Front.

there are absolutely no stakes here, but, still, i am now looking askance at every Montanan wondering if they were one of the idiots who picked Billings or Continental Divide.

right now the hens are out in the garden shredding last year's fallen leaves and dead plants so they will rot into the soil more quickly, relieving us of the work of doing that ourselves
