To address this, we’re integrating:
• Large-scale neurophysiology
• A large corpus of naturalistic sounds
• Machine learning
...to uncover the neural manifold in auditory cortex—a compact yet comprehensive representation of hundreds of natural sound categories. 5/
A key contributor is likely to be our limited understanding of perceptually relevant cortical representations of real-world sounds.
This gap remains a major obstacle in designing more effective hearing solutions. 4/
Although we understand much about how hearing loss alters neural coding—especially for simple sounds like tones and noise—we still struggle to predict individual perceptual outcomes, such as why hearing aids help some people more than others. 3/
My project — "Central auditory processing of natural sound categories following sensorineural hearing loss" — tackles a persistent challenge in the audiology clinic.
