As you work through it for yourself I would expect a bunch of ideas and terms to naturally present and absent themselves, but I am mainly asking if rules give authority over an aspect of play, or if they facilitate our fulfilling the responsibility we have as participants in the game: Paradigm shift

Yes, each person has responsibility for the experience, responsibility for whichever role(s) they take on socially, and the role(s) they play. Authority (the idea, not just a word choice) might not be required - it has just been part of the habitual framing of play.

Have you considered looking at #rpg #ttrpg play without framing it in a context of authority, but rather one of responsibility?
It's a valuable exercise.

Have you watched the famous British MI6 series, Sandbaggers? It also explores those nuances very seriously, stripped of the self-deprecating humor with which Bob covers his pain in his reports~

I really appreciate the series and when I turned to the books I was pleased to see the adaptation to screen had honored them quite well. As a plus, the seasons end differently than the source material, so you can enjoy the same story twice.

I find it is also interesting as it gives us a different perspective on the other major characters in the series. How reliable is Peter as a narrator? ;)

I have them all and both used and didn't use them in campaigns. I think it's very satisfying to run the game with 1 corebook of choice, and that will be how I run it in the future. That said, I was able to use and enjoy all of the support material which is really rare. The weaker ones are for F&D~

Episode 72: A Friendly, Conversation about Natural-Feeling Characters~
In this installment of the Friendly Conversations about RPGs series, I am joined by Erik Schmidt of the Setting First YouTube Channel, Blog, and Discord (Links Below). Our topic for this discussion is the interplay of setting, character, and player perspective to help foster characters which feel believable and lead players toward play that feels natural and grounded in that setting. If you enjoy where this conversation goes and how it gets there, I encourage you to take a look at Erik's channel and follow the link to the Setting First Discord (if Discord survives its own shenanigans). As usual with this series, it also has a YouTube video version which is annotated extensively to share further detail, explanation, subtext, and context.

If we toss jargon usually tied to limited understanding on the Internet of an effect like "immersion" on top of a filter of preference which is obscuring the supposed discussion of something such as 'metacurrency' the result has a good chance to fall short of expectations unless it's clickbait. 4/4

...it does something I do not like" is not the same discussion as "The metacurrency use in game X requires the players to interact with each other in Y way." Preferences are important to ppl deciding to play, or during design, but when discussing how something works - they just get in the way. 3/4

...sort out before much progress can be made in that discussion. This thread alone shows a variety of preferences and a range of perspectives on what RPGs are and those things end up dominating the discussion so that metacurrency as a tool is overshadowed. eg: "Metacurrency is bad because... 2/4

It isn't weird that OP notices a reduction in In-character play more in games far enough along the spectrum toward a focus on making a story in play that the name 'storygame' suits them - it's a feature of what makes them what they are. Discussion of metacurrency has preference and procedure to 1/4

I liked this quite a bit when it was new. I haven't re-read it since the sequel came out (also a long time ago). I had a harder time liking Black House, but found it has merits, too~

Watching the Olympics and writing on the #DeadCityBlues drop for this month, coming along nicely. 🏅✍️ Probably helped that I spent a good chunk of yesterday reading Chester Himes, Jim Thompson, and Raymond Chandler. Turns out noir homework counts as real work. 😄📚

A Friendly Conversation with @SettingFirstRPG about Natural Characters~
YouTube video by Runeslinger
Continuing the appropriately sporadic "Friendly Conversations about RPGs" series, Erik Schmidt of the Setting First YouTube Channel and blog was kind enough to join me to explore how the way we conceive of and present the #rpg #ttrpg world affects how characters feel to play~
