The Future of Transportation Is Not the Hyperloop or the Self-Driving Car. It’s the Bus, the Bike, and the Elevator.
Getting people around in new, different ways relies mostly on technologies that we have had for a while.
The future of transportation isn’t the #Hyperloop* or self-driving cars. It’s the bus, the bike and the elevator. Via @slate.com.
AND it’s better land-use & infrastructure decisions, reprioritizing space & budgets, accessible streets, & smart pricing mechanisms.
*hyperloop was always a distraction

It’s gone so quickly from ‘boat people’ to all immigrants. So quickly from ‘I don’t mind if they come here legally and pay taxes’ to ‘actually it’s anyone foreign’. We are living in the ‘first they came for’ poem. All to give the population a scapegoat so the super rich can hoard yet more wealth.

It’s so important to show people—esp public leaders—that e-bikes may look like traditional pedal bikes, but they’re used completely differently.
They’re like a miracle drug for replacing car trips.

Imagine all the space these people on bikes would be taking if they were in cars? Imagine the pollution, noise and emissions. Multimodal cities and urban greening is just common sense.
Paris is still a tight city with many streets that are just choking with cars. Despite the remarkable progress, there’s still plenty of work to do making the city work better with fewer cars and more choices.
Paris & @annehidalgo.bsky.social are praised for their visionary, progressive city-building, but they don’t get nearly enough credit for just being really pragmatic! Everything they’re doing is common sense.
They’re moving a lot more people with less space while cleaning the air & cooling the city.

Every day I cycle to work I realise that cycling is very often the fastest and most convenient way of getting around a big city, and, on my commute, orders of magnitude better than driving a car. It's a shame that many UK legislators either don't understand this, or are actively hostile to cycling.

Bus Services (No. 2) Bill [HL] publications - Parliamentary Bills - UK Parliament
Documents, and debates for Bus Services (No. 2) Bill [HL]
I have just spent a few hours writing up some evidence for the Bus Services (No. 2) Bill which is in the Commons committee stage.
It should be boring but important stuff about running bus services with a model that suits each area.

Alt: a cup of coffee with a heart shaped steam coming out of it
Kid walks out the door to school and I get to enjoy a peaceful coffee alone.
This is my motivation for safe streets. It’s really not radical or complicated.

Getting fucking sick of this 'fake/illegal ebike' bollocks that blurs the definitions of ebikes. EAPC regs are very clear on this! If electric cycle is EAPC compliant then it's an ebike. If it is not, it is defined as an electric motorcycle & required by law to be treated as a motorbike NOT EBIKE!

Wealth tax: a lot of questions and only a few answers
Calls for a UK wealth tax grow louder, but with little detail, critics claim it’s unworkable. But is it?
The UK’s richest 1% hold wealth exceeding £3.6m per household. Some argue a 2% wealth tax on assets over £10m could ease the financial strain. Why do critics say it’s unfeasible? New EAB writer @digby-uk.bsky.social takes a deep dive into the facts:

Labour's economics are all about growth, but for whom? Certainly not the poorest.
The best economics lift people out of poverty, not push more into it.
Reduced poverty means healthier people, better educated kids, happier workers, a richer more peaceful society. How did Labour lose its way so badly?
