This was a photo from June 2019. The dog is named Chamu, and we met when I was visiting a Sámi couple in Norway. The Sámi are the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and western Russia. This family taught us about their life and culture. A Sámi character also features in Volume 2 of LfaCH!

Based on this photo, a fellow author told me that I was "beautiful" and that they wanted to use me as visual inspiration for one of their characters. 😄
I really don't think it's that great of a photo, and it was a platonic compliment, but it gave a very welcome boost to my self-esteem!

Middle RIGHT is another flesh-eating abomination, who stalks the snows of the Great White North.
And bottom is a night flier whose flocks became legend for tearing off the head of one of the most famous heroes of the Maya.

Top is a chimeric, whale-eating leviathan who has been known in Hindu astrology for over 2,000 years.
Middle left is a twisted, flesh-eating corruption of one of the most widespread and significant beings in Turtle Island Indigenous/Native tradition.

In addition to 4 of the cryptid illustrations, I'll also break down my social media banner and logo, as well as the book's cover. Danielle did all of this too! I don't have the bandwidth to include all 13 of the book illustrations, because I'm still working on the audiobook and Volume 2.

I'll take you through the reference visuals, blueprint sketches, brainstorming, and different iterations that Danielle and I went through. Animal photos, temple murals, step-by-step explanations of how eyes or posture changed, and more. Maybe I'll throw in some of our Discord messages in there. 😆

This artbook will be totally free! It'll show what went into some of the monsters' appearances and roles: the traditional knowledge and understandings, science, mythology, emotional qualities, and some of the straight-up book material.

Of course, all of this will be centered around the images.

To honor the organic human creativity that defines art of any kind, I'm creating a Letters from a Cryptid Hunter ARTBOOK!

Danielle M. Caulk's illustrations are some of the best and most defining parts of Volume 1, and I want to show some of the behind-the-scenes process of creating them.

Fun fact: Owls can't turn their heads (horizontally) in a full 360° circle like many people believe. However, they can hit about 270°, which is almost as good! Combined with their floofy facial disk feathers, it sells the illusion.

The 2-D animated Clone Wars is phenomenal. I don't even like Star Wars that much, but my brother and I played these DVDs sooooo many times growing up. XD

Many parts fit the current situation, but the 1 vs 1,000 and the last-resort unarmed combat make this one pretty perfect. Watch the whole scene!
