If you haven’t already heard about TikTok’s new terms of service, it’s worth taking a peek, even if you’ve never had a profile on the platform.

Though the strike was ultimately unsuccessful, Tenayuca’s passionate speeches brought national attention to the issue, and altered the political consciousness of San Antonio.

12,000+ pecan shellers joined the strike and elected Tenayuca as their leader. Police used tear gas and clubs to break up picket lines and arrest strikers. But the strike continued for three months.

Tenayuca's biggest success came with the 1938 Pecan Shellers’ Strike. Pecan companies were common in Texas and, during this time, really leaned into taking advantage of desperate workers by underpaying them for dirty and difficult work.

Discrimination led to challenges when these folks sought New Deal jobs or tried to take advantage of aid programs. In an unfortunate parallel to current times, the police were also plaguing Latinx communities with violence and illegal deportations.

After graduating high school, she led multiple strikes, walkouts, and protests in response to issues impacting Mexican Americans. She saw how her Latinx community, in particular, was struggling to recover after the Great Depression.

As did the Great Depression during which Tenayuca and her family struggled, like many others. As a result, the central goal of her political activism would later be to ensure everyone always had enough food, regardless of income.

At age 17, she joined her first strike with women workers from the H.W. Finck Cigar Company. She witnessed police beat striking workers and was arrested for participating in the strike. The experience left a lasting impression.

Tenayuca was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 21st, 1916. She was raised by her grandparents who instilled a strong sense of social justice in her. Growing up she attended discussions about religion, labor rights, politics, and the Mexican Revolution with her grandfather.

This International Women’s Day we want to focus on someone who fought for immigrant rights. Meet Emma Tenayuca, a Mexican American labor organizer who led strikes by women workers in 1930s Texas.
