Raman is relatively new to politics but has killer instincts and sharp savvy.

Councilmember Nithya Raman to run for L.A. mayor, challenging onetime ally Karen Bass Raman would immediately pose a formidable challenge to Bass. She was the first council member to be elected with support from the Democratic Socialists of America.

This reminds me of the 2003 mayoral race in SF when board of supervisor pres and Green Party member Matt Gonzalez filed to run for mayor at the last minute, then nearly beat Gavin Newsom in his first run for mayor.

Ultimately, the Democratic party machine won. But…

Austin Beutner ends his run for L.A. mayor, a month after his daughter's death Beutner made his announcement a month after his daughter, 22-year-old Emily Beutner, died of undetermined causes.

Beutner posed the most potentially formidable challenge to Mayor Bass. I'm sorry for the reasons why he needs to withdraw, but not sorry he won't be in the race.
