Today, the VSU Fired Six brought the fight to the Virginia Capitol to advocate for higher ed workers to be included in collective bargaining legislation so that VA workers can be empowered to negotiate for workplace protections so illegal terminations without due process end.

“Our federal government is sending a message that only a narrow definition of humanities can be supported, celebrated and invested in, and that there are only a narrow set of people, culture and experiences that are worth understanding in depth"
The far right's new politicized higher ed accreditor is illegitimate.
"Rather than protecting educational quality, the CPHE appears designed to give partisan political actors a powerful new tool to pressure universities to conform to a narrow ideological agenda"
— Todd Wolfson, AAUP President
All evidence to date suggests that the CPHE is a partisan political body aiming to transform higher ed in a manner desired by Republican extremists & the donors who back them…a Trojan horse determined to use any power awarded it to bend public higher ed to their ideological agenda.

RIGHT NOW: The VSU ‘Fired Six’ are standing w/ the Virginia Public Sector Labor Coalition calling for all public service workers, including higher ed & home care workers, to
be included in historic collective bargaining legislation being debated at the Virginia General Assembly.

The VSU ‘Fired Six’ takes the Virginia State Capitol to demand their jobs back & for the General Assembly to pass full collective bargaining rights for all higher ed workers.

Florida prohibits universities from using the H-1B program to hire “new employees” until Jan. 5, 2027. The change will not affect existing H-1B holders, according to system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues.

An Invitation: Get to know your Governing Board.
Academic governing boards exercise significant & often final legal authority over the colleges & universities they rule. We need a rebalance of this power.

“The response was quite different. It’s not clear whether this reflects the difference in the public stands these students have taken or a fundamental change in the university’s approach...I hope it will prove to be the latter.”

Texas is on the front lines of the fight against government suppression of academic inquiry. We must continue to hold the line against those who wish to control the range of topics that can be taught in the classroom.
Keep fighting. Our democracy depends on it.

“Academic freedom —the ability to research, teach, & learn without interference is essential to the quality of education we offer in North Carolina.
Do we want UNC to go in the direction of Texas or Florida or we do we want to uphold the reputation, standards & quality that it has for decades?”
Dr. Temu speaks at on the unjustifiable terminations of the Fired Six.
JUSTICE NOW FOR THE FIRED SIX!
We’re out here at Virginia State University demanding the immediate reinstatement of the Fired Six! These tenured & TT faculty members were abruptly removed from VSU’s Agricultural Department without notice & in clear violation of basic due process.
More to come…
JUSTICE FOR THE FIRED SIX NOW!
We will not stop until these wrongfully terminated professors are reinstated with full back pay.

We will fight this Virginia State. Your treatment of these faculty was reprehensible. We love our HBCUs, but @aaup.org & @aft.org will not stand for disrespectful treatment of members! Solidarity @ucwva.bsky.social ❤️ www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
Hands Off St. John’s Faculty!
Crowd gathers
Powerful rally at St. John’s University today against unprecedented union busting tactics by President Father Shanley who, after 56 years, is refusing to recognize SJU’s two longstanding faculty unions.
SJU faculty have been working without a contract for 239 days!
Union busting is disgusting.
Brad Lander: “It’s pretty outrageous…once people think that they don’t have to follow the law because the president doesn’t, workers suffer, our universities suffer, students & faculty suffer.”
St. John’s University can’t just UNrecognize faculty unions after 56 years. That’s not the law works.
I want to be clear, @aaup.org stands with our HBCUs. At the same time, what Virginia State University did by laying off 6 tenured/tenure-stream faculty, for NO CAUSE, & threatening them with trespass breaks every norm. It is shameful. Reinstate the Fired Six! SIGN & SHARE

What is being labeled “controversial” today is the very knowledge Texas will need to survive tomorrow.
The question is no longer whether higher education can be saved as it is.
The question is whether we are ready to imagine—and build—what comes next.
Important op-ed in the @texasobserver.org.
Reinstate the Fired Six at VSU!
Six tenured & tenure track faculty members were abruptly fired at Virginia State University without cause or any semblance of due process.
Sign this petition to demand their reinstatement & a public commitment from VSU to honor tenure & end arbitrary dismissals.
The assault at OSU underscores the contentious role of OSU's Chase Center, an "intellectual diversity" center forced onto OSU by Ohio lawmakers. The Chase Center has been widely criticized for its limited accountability in hiring & curriculum & lack of responsibilities to the university.
“Abolishing gender programs & the lessons they have taught, will, Trump & his acolytes hope, undermine our ability not just to condemn, but also to critically analyze the policies & practices they want to impose.”
Must Read by Joan Scott, member of the AAUP’s Committee on Academic Freedom.
The AAUP condemns the attack of a journalist at OSU.
This incident is a predictable consequence of the dismantling of widely accepted practices of academic shared governance.
How?
The assailant is an employee of the Chase “intellectual diversity” center which has limited accountability to OSU.
AAUP President Todd Wolfson issued the following statement in response to Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt's Executive Order issued today immediately eliminating academic tenure at the state’s public regional universities and community colleges.
Reminder: Never capitulate to tyrants.
Fight Back.

An important post by Michel DeGraff in Academe blog about the failure of some AAUP chapters to adequately defend their members on Pal-related speech/research. This is a terrible, shameful problem at too many AAUP chapters. academeblog.org/2026/01/30/t...
“A central premise of freedom in the United States is freedom to speak our minds, to engage in critical debate or conversation without fear of state reprisal.”
— Veena Dubal, AAUP General Counsel
Education is a public good for all.
When politicians censor classroom teaching in order to narrow the field of topics that students can engage in, they rob them of a stellar world class education.
This is what is happening at Texas A&M & other institutions in the state.
