So I think human chess skill is still pretty awe-inspiring… but what it isn’t is uniquely human, not anymore.

In retrospect though, chess feels like a game that’s so deterministic that it’s well -suited for machines, and it‘s a marvel of sorts that humans have kept up as well as we have (and of course we can still be amazed at Usain Bolt even though he can be beaten in a race by, say, an electric scooter)

like, once machines became better at chess than humans, it became more problematic to view it as a proxy for intelligence. Will be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out with gen AI

it’s interesting that we’ve kept on rewarding and valorizing human chess skill even after machines surpassed it… though it does seem like the public perception of chess champions may have moved a bit away from “really smart person“ in the direction of “really good-at-chess person“

Honestly I’d guess that the benefits of these drugs will likely far outweigh the negatives described here for most people. But it’s still good to know about the potentially increased risk of osteoporosis, injury etc.

That’s fine! But knowing about potential negative consequences can help avoid, mitigate or prepare for them.

I think I missed some of that exchange to be honest! One odd and slightly alienating thing about this medium is these serial brief encounters with seemingly unhappy people.

I guess parachuting into the conversation to make a snarky comment wasn‘t the most enlightened behavior on my part… ah well.

well, I don’t want to brag but I got an A in my intro (and only) CS class in college so if you ever need expertise on that side of things just drop me a line.
