At Climate Brides, we are learning not to reduce these realities to causes and effects. We trace messy, intersecting pressures.

Marriage may become a survival strategy. A mobility tactic. A last resort. What looks like tradition could also be a response to shrinking choices. 👇
⚡In South Asia, rising heat, floods, and droughts are deepening longstanding inequalities, but the link between climate and child marriage is not linear. It is complex, shaped by poverty, migration, patriarchy, and the absence of strong institutions. 👇
Is climate change causing child marriage? It is NOT that simple. 👇
14/ This isn’t just about marriage.
It’s about inequality, labour, care, climate—and whose work is valued when crisis hits.
Please share to keep the conversation going.

12/ To create just, effective policy, we need climate responses that:
✅ Recognise gendered labour
✅ Share work fairly
✅ Reduce the burden on girls & women
Because resilience isn’t gender-neutral. #ClimateJustice is #GenderJustice
11/ What’s missing from climate policy?
Most plans treat households as gender-neutral.
But they rarely ask:
📍Who’s doing the unpaid work?
📍How does crisis shift that labour?
📍How does this shape child marriage risk?
10/
At the same time, boys—especially in rural or low-income areas—are pushed into work early.
They may migrate, take dangerous jobs, or leave school to support families.
These shifts also influence decisions around girls.

9/ Climate change affects boys & men too—especially through disrupted livelihoods.
Erratic weather hits crops & incomes. But expectations to “provide” don’t shift.
When that breaks down, families may turn to early marriage as a form of control or relief.
8/ Pakistan, 2022 floods:
30M+ people affected.
In camps, girls cared for siblings, elders, the sick.
With schools shut and resources low, some families saw early marriage as a way to cope with prolonged crisis. climatebrides.buzzsprout.com/1999556/epis...
7/ Bundelkhand, India:
Girls walk up to 15km a day for water during drought.
Education becomes harder to sustain.
Marriage becomes a practical—if painful—decision. khabarlahariya.org/weight-of-wa...
6/ This growing burden often pushes girls out of school.
First, fewer days in class. Then, full withdrawal. 🚸
Marriage becomes less about tradition, more about narrowed options.
#GirlsNotBrides #IntersectionalJustice
5/ Climate change makes daily survival harder:
🌱 Drought = longer water walks
🌊 Floods = displacement & caregiving
🌾 Food shortages = more pressure on girls’ labour
Girls take on more—at home & in informal work. Often unpaid. Often unprotected. #ClimateBrides
4/ As climate pressures grow, so do these demands.
Girls lose time to study, rest, or play. Some families see marriage as a way to pass on or reduce that labour—a coping strategy under stress. 💁♀️⚒️🌀
#FeministClimateAction #ClimateBrides
3/ Girls, especially, face this burden early.
Their labour is often framed as “helping out,” rather than acknowledged as real work.
Because it’s linked to obedience & preparation for marriage, it comes without rights or limits. ⚖️
#UnpaidCareWork #GenderJustice #ClimateBrides
2/ What does that mean?
In many homes, work isn’t shared equally.
Women & girls do most of the unpaid care & survival labour—
Cooking. Collecting water. Caring for others. Farming.
It’s vital—but rarely recognised or protected. #ClimateBrides

(7/9) To fight child marriage, we have to fight the systems that allow it to thrive under pressure.
That means confronting gender norms, unpaid care work, masculine expectations—and the climate crisis itself. #ClimateBridesMap #GenderInequality
(6/9) But let’s be clear: climate change doesn’t cause child marriage. It deepens the cracks patriarchy already created. And it turns injustice into policy, into practice, into fate. #ClimateBridesMap #GenderInequality
(5/9) In #Bangladesh, child marriage surged after Cyclone Amphan.
In #Nepal, drought and male migration have pushed girls out of school and into marriage.
Climate hits, and gender decides the fallout. #ClimateBridesMap #GenderInequality
