I am pretty sure the woman with child is often traditionally interpreted as Mary. What I had never noticed before is the mention of the Ark of the Covenant directly prior to this, which makes sense of the allegorical simile of Mary and the Ark. I think?

I was listening to Hart’s translation of Revelation a couple weeks ago. I noticed a detail I never had before, for whatever reason.

At the end of Revelation 11, mention is made of the Ark of the Covenant. This is immediately followed by a narrative concerning a woman with child.

For a long time I have felt that fundamentalist Christianity treats faith like the game of Jenga.

Might have to log off fb for the rest of lent. My follows should clue them in that I’m Eastern Orthodox, but I keep getting promoted public posts about extra canonical lit suggesting I should be troubled and have my faith shaken.

Like wut; sorry, I’m not a Jenga fundamentalist.

The Israelis bombed cars in a heavily populated part of Beirut: Ramlet El Bayda. At least 6 people were killed.

They then bombed Aramoun in Aley, Mt Lebanon.

Neither Ramlet El Bayda nor Aramoun are Israel’s β€˜usual’ target areas.

Again: Israel’s goal is to destroy Lebanon itself

_The Philokalia: The Complete Text, Volume Four_. Probably as good a a book as any to read for an introduction to St. Gregory Palamas, since it includes many short or abbreviated texts authored by him.

Hitherto none (I think) of the works of Gregory Palamas had been translated into English. Fr. John Meyendorff worked exclusively with Greek manuscripts to compose this landmark study, as Tikhon Pino recently pointed out in a conference lecture.

I begin with the cover of a book I actually do not own, _A Study of Gregory Palamas_ by John Meyendorff. I have been meaning to acquire this book for some time now. It includes a learned timeline or chronology of the life of St. Gregory. It was a pioneering work translated into English in 1964.

I want to post pics of the books by St. Gregory here, not in the historical order in which they were written by him, but instead in the order they were published in English.

I do not intend to broadly summarize the importance of St. Gregory here, but I did want to pay homage to him in words and photos. I have not read him even as poorly as I have read St. Maximus and others, so I’m not in position to give an account.

Perhaps not surprisingly St. Gregory Palamas is no exception. I shouldn’t’ve been surprised to learn how indebted he is to the Greek Patristic tradition, but perhaps the vehemence with which he derides the value of Greek learning gave me pause to consider how well he knew the likes of St. Maximus.

Having a small personal library is a funny thing, because I have many books I want to read and keep, but have not read yet in their entirety. I occasionally pick them up and find footnotes and references to other books I already own, which experience manages to encourage me in my collecting.

Inspired by Sister Vassa Larin’s podcasts this week on St. Gregory Palamas and hesychasm, I’ve decided to preemptively pull down my Palamas collection and dive in (or at least get my toes wet).
