There is a time and a place for everything, including the five so-called career limiting moves on this list.

Have you done any of these things?

If you hate your résumé, you are not alone.

Most people hate their resumes, because the way we’ve been taught to write a résumé is the worst way possible.

Here’s a better way!

This is the job search advice I wish I had gotten

If you know right now that you would never work for this organization, decline.

Just a quick email that says, “Thanks so much for the invitation; my situation has changed, and I’m no longer a candidate for this role” will do the trick.

Here’s to you!

A. If you could use interview practice or you want to learn more about the organization in case they might have a more suitable position for you (either now or later) go to the interview.

There’s no downside except the time investment.

Q. Hi Liz, If you know you are going to turn down a position, should you accept the interview and decline afterwards or draft a letter and decline upfront before the interview is scheduled?

Q. How do I answer, “Why should we hire you?”

A. “Here’s what I’ve heard so far. You’re looking for a business analyst to assess how automation and AI can take time and cost out of your recruiting and onboarding processes, then work with IT to make it happen. What did I miss?”

Personality tests are nonsense and have zero validity. They shouldn’t even be legal in the hiring process.

She wrote back, please call me anyway.

Liz I am here to do my job, not help my boss’s wife with her side projects.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Anjali

FOLKS, what would you do in this situation?

17.02.2025 00:49 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

I thought that was it, but this week, she wrote to me, and said, call me, I need your help again.

I wrote back and said, I wish I could help, I am slammed at work and anyway we’ve reached the limit to my social media knowledge.

I thought that really pushed a boundary.

Free consulting from me to her, on company time. I had not taken notes. I tried to remember the conversation. I sent her a short email with three bullet points.

17.02.2025 00:49 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

She is a real talker. It took me three tries to finally get her off the phone. It was very awkward.

As we finished the call, she asked me to write down everything I told her and send it to her in an email message.

Anyway, the next day she called me for advice about promoting a fundraising drive at her child’s school.

I talked to her for half an hour. I gave her some tips.

I said, how can I help you? I hoped she would tell me who she was because I knew she was not an employee in this location.

She said, “Grant told me to talk to you, he said you are great with social media.” Grant is our VP, her husband.

I use social media in my job, but I’m not an expert.

As we all left the large conference room after the luncheon Tammy grabbed me and said, “I understand I need to talk to you.”
I had never been introduced to her. I wasn’t even sure who she was.

Our business unit leader’s wife “Tammy” was at the luncheon. I’m not sure why she was there. She did not participate, she basically observed.

Back in December there was a management luncheon at our office. I participated although I am not a manager, because there is no HR manager here.
