Mark Avery: royal rumble The desire of various wildlife charities to appoint a royal patron leaves Mark Avery slightly bemused given the various scandals over the years.

My December column in Birdwatch magazine. Last month cats, next issue, the Greens.

Cirl-rich March @BirdwatchExtra . @markavery.bsky.social rules out caticide, @LucyMcRobert1 on saving vagrants. @bonxie likes the new bins by the RSPB(conservationists turned lottery runners). Lacklustre snaps that won Photo of the Year fail to excite, sadly! Kit Day must be spinning in his hide

Emissions? Biodiversity loss? Flood risk? Pollution of watercourses? And subsidised by taxpayers across the world. What is the real cost/benefit?

Tomb of the Eagles, Orkney Explore the Tomb of the Eagles, a 5,000-year-old Stone Age tomb on the dramatic cliffs of Orkney’s South Ronaldsay.

Certainly does look like a W-t Eagle even if not exactly a field guide rendition! Across the Pentland Firth on South Ronaldsay is the Stone Age Tomb of the Eagles tomboftheeagles.co.uk where many W-tE bones were found.

Week in wildlife: a watchful egret, a sun-seeking swan and a procession of caterpillars This week’s best wildlife photographs from around the world

Could be better - too many captive animals (it’s not week in captive wild animals) and a lot of vague identifications of the actual species. How wild are those β€˜wild horses’? If your sport, art or cookery coverage were of this standard you’d be embarrassed. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I thought this was an interesting example from USA (and the link to Aldo Leopold got my attention).

I did stay awake & it was a better programme than most - not shouty. @georgemonbiot.bsky.social got 3 sustained rounds of applause - Kettering’s pretty green (& Green).
I haven’t seen George for years, but he is often very impressive (not always, but often). I’d like to be more Monbiot.

Question Time is sometimes pretty good but often horrendous, and I’m normally in bed at that time. But I see it’s from nearby Kettering and, more importantly, @georgemonbiot.bsky.social is on the panel. May give it a try tonight.

Glass half full tale.

I gave a talk last night in an in-county pub. Nice crowd.

Just before I arrived I was potholed and nearside front tyre wrecked. Β£75 taxi home (45mins) and the bill for repair to come.

But the group were fun and it meant I could have 2 pints as I wasn’t driving home. Cheers!

HOME - Mark Avery

I’ve been fiddling with my website HOME page. Might fiddle some more. Any thoughts on this markavery.info ?

Doesn’t look great on my phone - how about yours? But I’m more interested in whether the words are helpful to visitors.

Any comments gratefully received.

UK farming very reliant on high inputs - many would say too reliant and too high inputs. Check a waterway near you to see where some end up. www.theguardian.com/business/202...
