Tonight, 22 January, is #CleanAirNight2026, and we're raising awareness of the dangers of wood burning stoves. These stoves not only put the health of you and those around you at risk, but wood burning harms the planet, and creates more harmful carbon emissions than other sources of heat.
I’m sharing this video again because people don’t really get what these data centers and ai are doing to our planet and our communities. Especially Black communities because they were strategically placed there.
I need you to listen to these people.
STOP USING AI. STOP SUPPORTING AI.
Organisers of Clean Air Night (Thursday 22 Jan) say “wood burning is the most polluting way to heat your home”. One poorly operated stove can affect dozens of nearby households & the surrounding ecosystem, & even newer “eco-design” stoves release more particulate pollution hourly than many vehicles.
Do you know the hidden costs & harms of woodburning stoves? Nearly 2,500 UK deaths per year are attributed to the health harms linked to fine particulates produced by domestic burning, including heart & lung damage, diabetes & dementia. #welovecleanerair
These and other environmental risks of the proposed North East AI 'Growth Zone' are detailed in this post by @karenpylai.bsky.social, Professor of Economic Geography at Durham University. www.climateactionnewcastle.com/post/ai-grow...
The water consumption at the proposed Cambois data centre in Blyth could be 50 times higher than the original estimates put forward by its operator, QTS.

TONIGHT!
It's nearly time for the CAN Xmas Social! We'll be meeting in the Forth pub, Pink Lane, Newcastle from 7pm this Monday, 1 December, and we'd love to see you. The pub serves food, and has good links to public transport, being handily located near Central Station. All are very welcome. 🎄
This is what many of us have been saying. Part 3 of the Planning & Infrastructure Bill is based on a myth: that we don't have enough homes because wildlife and green spaces are protected. It will solve nothing, and inflict terrible harm on our remaining ecosystems

BREAKING: Our latest research shows a 65% increase in complaints in Smoke Control Areas across England since last year.
Families across the country are suffering from neighbours’ burning, yet even after thousands of complaints, barely a handful of fines have been issued. #AirPollution #WoodBurning
Wood burners linked to 2,500 deaths a year in the UK, analysis finds
- Use of wood-burning stoves and fires in homes is mostly unnecessary and their toxic pollution costs the NHS millions

Climate investment is growth opportunity of 21st century, says economist
Losing coral reefs is losing a vital resource for hundreds of millions of people and the home of about a quarter of all marine species. How much longer can filthy rich fossil fuel companies avoid accountability for fuelling the climate crisis in times like these? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Last week, a new North East AI Growth Zone was announced, with new data centres at Blyth & Cobalt. But what is at stake for resources & the environment? Prof Karen Lai (@karenpylai.bsky.social) of Durham University explains the issue in a guest blog. www.climateactionnewcastle.com/post/ai-grow...
This speculation around new licensing is a complete distraction from the conversation we need to have.
The North Sea is in decline, which is just a geological fact. We’ve burned most of our gas, and around 80% of our oil is exported. It plays little role in UK energy security.
A 7% decline in English birds in just 5 years is astonishing
The web of life is unravelling fast
Join the national Day of Action to #StopRosebank this Saturday, 6 September. There are TWO events in the North East to choose from:
1. 12pm opposite Equinor, Port of Tyne, South Shields, NE33 5SW
2. 3pm @ Central Station, Centurion Bar, Neville Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 5DG
Official figures released yesterday show that nearly 440,000 hectares have been burned in wildfires so far this year in the EU
This is more than DOUBLE the size of the area burned this time last year
Unchecked climate change makes this more likely and more dangerous
