straight up misinformation from Politico Power Switch today: "The Clean Air Act was never designed to regulate planet-warming pollution."

the definition of air pollution in the 1970 Clean Air Act deliberately mentions weather and climate, in part because carbon dioxide was known to be dangerous.

This Black Death findings shows us that humans and nature do not always have to be kept separate to conserve and promote biodiversity. Indeed, recognising landscapes as cultural ecosystems may help us imagine futures where both nature and people can live together and thrive.

While the collapse of the AMOC may not yet be inevitable, these findings suggest it is weakening and may approach a tipping point faster than previously thought.

The ocean is no longer just absorbing our heat; it is preparing to release it. We must stop preparing for "averages" and start preparing for โ€œextremes.โ€

The traditional model of a steady, linear climb in global temperatures is increasingly at odds with observations. We've relied on the oceanโ€™s ability to act as a storage buffer for thermal energy. Recent data on Ocean Stratification indicates this buffer is undergoing a mechanical decoupling.

How do we best describe how money can tilt discourse and thus change what we think is true?
Itโ€™s โ€œpolitical economyโ€, but thatโ€™s hard for the general public.

The biology analogy is good: money can create artificial selection, and Darwin knew selection pressure can make big change.

The US Is Counting Traffic Deaths Wrong By emphasizing the number of people killed per mile rather than deaths per capita, traffic safety groups risk normalizing the factors that make American roads so deadly.

Americans drive a lot more than people in other rich countries.

If we didnโ€™t drive so much, we wouldnโ€™t die in so many crashes.

Itโ€™s a simple point, but one that NHTSA, traffic engineers, and many road safety orgโ€™s have yet to learn.

The 15th Global Days of Action on Military Spending (#GDAMS) will take place from April 10 to May 9, in which will probably be the most relevant edition yet. We'll take action to oppose war and demand major cuts of military spending, while promoting peaceful & just alternatives. Will you join us?โ˜ฎ๏ธ

It's not just more efficient - once you have installed the solar (or wind) and the equipment to use it, you're not dependent on a volatile commodity market so not subject to supply disruptions or price swings.

Now of course you can't just plug a PV panel directly into a car - it might cost 2-3 times more than the panel itself to install it in a field or roof and commission it. Fossil fuel infrastructure also costs a lot, but it's mainly already built so that is largely a sunk cost.

So a single solar panel produces about *100 times more useful energy* than a tank of petrol.

Technology tends to work this way. In the old days, accounting was done entirely by hand in ledger books, sent by courier and summarized by the office of the Controller. Then everything was automated but amazingly none of the work went away. The number of accountants never really dropped.

The market will not solve the climate crisis. More and more people are saying it.

I'm seeing another white paper today, saying it. A question is what will: democratic institutions? corporate authoritarians? no one?

100%. This also sidesteps that LLMs are explicitly sold as cheating and anti-labor tools. The ads and influencers students watch all show them how to use it to cheat. Workers are forced to use it or be fired, but get replaced anyway once itโ€™s trained to a bare minimum standard. Itโ€™s not hidden.
