The dog in my profile picture was Bandit, who we lost to bone cancer in early 2023. I've had trouble letting go of him. I'm an introverted code monkey who has been working with computers since the days of core memory and paper tape.

In honour of Sir Tony Hoare: βThere are two ways of constructing a piece of software: One is to make it so simple that there are obviously no errors, and the other is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious errors.β
A t-shirt reading "Everything is open source if you can read assembly".
The t-shirt I wore today reminds me of the fun I had in the good old days patching programs on PCs and Sun workstations. The vi editor on my Sun 3/80 didn't have the same restrictions as the stock version did.

Kya was like that when we had snow and ice covering the entire yard. It was tough coaxing her to find the right spot while we were both so cold.
While counting my neck exercises this morning, I reached 51. I remembered that's a triple 17, a fact important to me 30+ years ago when I used to play darts after work. I was only mildly competent for the brief period when my beer intake roughly balanced the residual caffeine from earlier.

Happy Valentineβs Day!
My Mom made the mistake of taking me to see the Evel Knievel movie when I was a kid. A couple months later, I had built some ramps to use for jumping my minibike. I chickened out before I got to a significant jump but it was fun while it lasted.
A white pit bull in a red sweater at the end of a long leash investigates an indentation in the snow covered ground. The sun shines through a line of gnarled trees behind her.
Kya occasionally reminds me of Bandit (the dog in my profile photo) when she pauses to investigate every small imperfection in the snow.
This is perfect timing! We just watched the movie again and I was left wanting to enjoy the book once more. The only thing better would be having Wil read it to me!
A contented looking white pit bull in a pink sweater rests her head on my leg with the filling from her new stuffed toy scattered on the floor behind her.
One of Kya's joys is destuffing a new toy. She does it with enthusiasm and is completely focused until she gets the squeaker out about 15 minutes later.
Our pit bull, Kya has claimed 2 of my old hoodies to snuggle under, one for each floor. She recently discovered the joys of sliding around on our icy driveway while playing catch. I feel sorry that she wasn't treated like this before we adopted her.
One thing I've discovered as I've gotten older is never opt for cheaper when comfort is on the line. Sorry, The Princess Bride is playing in the background here and it undoubtedly influenced me.

The head of our white pit bull dozing in my wife's lap rests on the arm of the chair. Like many white pit bulls, her darker spots are visible on her ears and through her thin fur.
Few things relax Kya more than being in Mom's lap. Today she enjoyed a couple hours there.

"The Trump administration is closing NASAβs largest research library on Friday, a facility that houses tens of thousands of books, documents and journals β many of them not digitized or available anywhere else." (gift link)
I just watched it and somehow had never seen it before. I think I'll try reading the story it was based on. Thanks!
A 60 pound white pit bull relaxes on my lap after burrowing her head between my arm and side.
Kya relaxes after we all stayed up late to watch the ball drop last night. She's a bit too big to be a lap dog but never lets that stop her.
TV or computer monitor? I got so spoiled by upgrading my monitor at home to 4k that my HD monitor at work feels cramped. Thank goodness I only have to use it once a week.

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.

I still get a little nostalgic for the old batch processing days occasionally. Card readers and big noisy line printers made computers seem more impressive.
Take it from me, food left in a backpack over summer break is definitely something to be avoided. I remember the overpowering odor 30 years later.
