Texas is on the front lines of the fight against government suppression of academic inquiry. We must continue to hold the line against those who wish to control the range of topics that can be taught in the classroom.
Keep fighting. Our democracy depends on it.

This petition challenges serious violations of public sector workersโ due process rights, shared governance, attacks on academic freedom and academic integrity at a public HBCU.

Who would have thought that the public University of Texas and the private Johns Hopkins would look so alike in 2026?
Details about implementation are scarce. Current graduate students will be able to finish their degrees. Beyond that depends on an opaque curriculum review process.

The proposed policy on "Teaching Controversial Topics" is vague, leaves key terms undefined, and would have a chilling effect on what is taught. This, in turn, would curtail the freedom of our students to learn and Texas' ability to recruit world-class faculty working on pressing issues.
๐จ๐จUT Regents may vote to limit teaching of 'controversial topics' this week. ๐

Gender Studies gives people the tools to question the exploitation of women and exposes elite men's abuse of power, money, and sex.
Some of the best departments, some of the best teachers, scholars, and students in the US and worldwide are at UT in these programs. As far as I am aware, the programs enroll well, are in demand, produce award-wining scholarship. Why in the world would anyone make this decision? @aaup.org
if you are a faculty member in Texas and you haven't joined @texasaaup.bsky.social yet you should have done that yesterday. (actually this applies to faculty everywhere, join @aaup.org
Devastated to learn that Univ of Texas at Austin is closing the American Studies dept. The years I spent there earning my PhD were formative, making me the teacher, thinker, and writer I am today. I've passed on what I learned at UT to thousands of students over the past 20 years. Just awful.
