In future work, we intend to further examine the over-time malleability of conceptions of democracy to learn whether (and to what degree) they respond to elite contestation over backsliding -- so hopefully more to come soon.

We find that people with a thicker, less majoritarian conception of democracy were more likely not only to oppose the overhaul but also to protest against it. Furthermore, a thick conception of democracy amplifies the effects that affective and ideological factors have on the probability of protest.

To answer this question, we analyze two waves of the Israel Polarization Panel: one collected prior to the governmentβs announcement its plan to restructure Israeli democracy on January 2023, and one collected in April, at the height of the protests against it.

I love this quote, from the one and only Steve Levitsky: βWhen folks from Turkey, Hungary, Venezuela, or Nicaragua ask me what to do [against backsliding], I tell themβmobilize the people as they did in Israel.β But who were the people mobilized in Israel?

Who protests against democratic backsliding? A new working paper with Margalit, Sheffer and Yakir examines this issue and finds that peopleβs conceptions of what democracy means play a crucial role in predicting whether they engage in active opposition to backsliding efforts. osf.io/preprints/so...

New paper in @ajpseditor.bsky.social. Is descriptive representation good for substantive representation? Why do voters stay loyal to corrupt and poorly governing ethnic parties? I argue that we ought to focus less on patronage and more on dignity concerns. Defiant pride can come at a price. 1/π§΅
