Generational attitudes can make it hard for older women who are experiencing domestic abuse to seek help. Some feel they should be able to cope quietly as “mature” women or worry they won’t be believed.
But abuse is abuse, no matter how old you are, and you deserve support.

Many older survivors have their own health issues which abusers exploit to gain control.
An abusive partner might withhold medication, threaten to damage medical equipment or use physical impairment as an excuse to isolate someone.
This can make women feel trapped.

This economic control traps women with abusive partners through fear of poverty or losing their home.

Many women over 50 face financial barriers to leaving an abuser.
Often they have little or no independent income and may even hold savings or a pension that disqualify them from benefits or social housing.

These dynamics can mask the severity of the abuse and lead to underreporting among older women.
No one should suffer in silence. 💜
📞If you feel trapped or frightened in your own home, help is available.
2/3
Many older women report that while physical violence may reduce as their partner ages, coercive control and emotional abuse continue or increase.
This long-term trauma leaves many ‘invisible’ survivors, women who have endured decades of abuse and think there is no way out.
