“Why Do You Still Have a Job?”
The Surprising Complexity of Replacing Physicians With AI
My latest Substack:
Why predictions that radiologists will be replaced by AI (including, famously, by genAI founding father and Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton) have been wildly off base, and what that teaches us about job replacement for doctors.

Nobody likes it except that one guy who gets to change the really big clock because they let him swing from all the gears while he does it. The Old Clock Master they call him. He gets up there on those gears and gets to swinging and whooping and he's the only one who likes this.

When we talk about Baby Boomers not getting off the stage: In 1997, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2007, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2017, the US president was born in 1946.
And next year in 2027? The US president will have been born in 1946.

As Kagan notes in her dissent, the Court opted not to hear the due process parental rights argument against bans on gender-affirming medical care in Skrmetti, basically setting up a regime where parents can force their trans children back into the closet but cannot help them out of it

I wonder about whether that’s right. Think about when compilers came out. At that time I’m sure everyone said folks who didn’t learn assembly would struggle relative to those who did because using a compiler would be better if you knew assembly. But within a few years I doubt it was relevant….

On January 10, 2026, while driving back to work after getting lunch with his father
and cousin, a car quickly passed O., sped up, then stopped in front of him. (Id. ¶ 3.) A
few men in civilian clothes stepped out of the car and asked for his identification. (Id.)
The men threatened O.—if he did not get out of the car, they would force him out. (Id.)
O. exited the car and was told he was under arrest. (Id.) The men handcuffed him and did
not allow him to bring his phone. (Id.) O. felt like he was being kidnapped. (Id.)
The men detained O., his father, and his cousin, taking them all to Whipple. (Id.
¶ 4.) At Whipple, there was “food scattered on the floor, the floor was sticky with mud,
and everything stuck to your shoes.” (Id. ¶ 5.) The space was so cramped that sometimes
there was no space to sit on the floor. (Id.)
The horror stories rolling in from Minnesota are just the tip of the iceberg. This 20-year-old, who's lawfully present in the country, was arrested for being Latino, then jailed in a filthy cell where he couldn't even sit down. 18 days of illegal detention. democracyforward.org/wp-content/u...

No no no no no — similar to expertise on farm animal sounds and awareness of the dangers of quicksand, trapezoids were absolutely going to be key to my life. Somehow that has not been the case for any of those items. I’m not sure where I went wrong?

@cafedujord.bsky.social, I’m curious — in your threads about similar meetings I don’t recall seeing public comments from folks who themselves desperately need affordable housing. I hope it sways the council! Any idea what led so many people in that state to comment at this particular meeting?

Occupy Democrats post: "BREAKING: Kash Patel was just busted LYING TO CONGRESS in order to protect pedophiles!
Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna have successfully been able to view a slew of unredacted Epstein files, and they discovered that Trump’s disgraced and wildly incompetent FBI Director Kash Patel has been lying to Congess, under oath, in order to protect the other rich and powerful men who played major roles in the Epstein sex-trafficking ring.
Thanks to pressure from Massie and Khanna, the DOJ reluctantly unredacted an FBI report naming Jewish billionaire Les Wexner, owner of Victoria’s Secret and notorious Epstein associate, as one of the co-conspirators in the sex-trafficking ring.
“This is significant because Kash Patel testified to Congress that FBI had no evidence of other sex traffickers. This is FBI’s own 2019 document listing Wexner as a coconspirator in child sex trafficking. It wasn’t unredacted until tonight,” said Khanna’s partner-in-justice, Rep. Thomas Massie, on Twitter on February 10th.
The two spent two hours on February 9th examining unredacted Epstein files and were shocked at what they saw.
“Most of the unredacted files were redacted—70 to 80 percent. Massie and I saw that there were six men who were co‑conspirators and were being protected. Those names need to be made public. "
"There’s no excuse for releasing survivors’ names while protecting these six men. There are probably more. In just two hours, we saw that these six men were being protected.”
Kash Patel’s FBI is actively engaged in a cover-up on behalf of serial pedophiles and must be fired immediately — and held accountable for his own role in protecting pedophiles."
I have to say, I do not love this new trend of large liberal accounts with millions of followers identifying Jews.

Also, it’s not nearly as impressive as it sounds. The previous state rep. was a Democrat too. So this is a hold for the Democrats, not a flip. Seems like it’s one of those (increasingly rare) Southern districts that votes for Democrats for local offices and Republicans for federal races.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:
In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
