Definitely solved in some cultural contexts and not others!
My student @historyjacob.bsky.social has shown the new OCR tools work very well with early modern English print text. We use to struggle with the long s and many other issues. This opens up NER on sources that use to be too messy. He also developed a fine tuned NER model for Atlantic commodities.

I don't do drafting in LaTeX templates. I write in word/google docs/etc, and then only put text into the template once it's nearly ready to go & to work on figures/finalize length. Also highly recommend using Overleaf as your interface for LaTeX - LaTeX templates as word documents never works.
