It reveals altered family dynamics and evolving nature of sibling relationships. Familial duties persistently influence these dynamics, while first-born children redefine their roles based on personal choice rather than obligation, within the wider individualising societal context in mainland China.

Our paper, co-authored by Dr Zilu Wang and myself, has just been published on Families, Relationships and Societies. It investigates the lived experiences of first born children under China’s two-child policy in Chinese families where there are substantial age gaps between siblings (over 15 years).
