Yep, on the DS the bottom screen was just narration and the top was like the Adventure mode in the remake.
It's a shame it's one or the other in the remake but the flowchart is super convenient.
If I remember correctly, the Novel mode in 999 has a lot more lines of narration than the Adventure mode. Characters are always talking about what just happened because there's no external narrator describing it in the past tense.
