We wrote a piece on how easy it is to write gene regulatory sequences. - Turns out, it isn't that easy even though we know a lot about cis-regulation.
huge credit to @carldeboer.bsky.social to seeing this through so our thoughts aren't lost. I promise, it's a worthwhile read!

This is a cool study that you should all read. Full credit to the key agitator, Alexandra Gurzau, and noting not possible without amazing collaborators, and another fun effort for me, personally, with long time collab @marnieblewitt.bsky.social

Our new preprint on SMCHD1! Weβve shown SMCHD1βs ATPase activity is critical for function in vivo, and excitingly a new DNA binding domain neighbouring the ATPase domain activates the enzymatic function, which is important for normal chromatin binding.

Client Challenge
Our work on #RegulatoryTrajectories is out today in Nat. Comms: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Led by @raquelrouco.bsky.social, this study establishes a new framework to study how enhancer landscapes act sequentially at developmental loci and are silenced to shape gene expression patterns. (1/n)

Work published today in @natbiotech.nature.com from Arcβs Luke Gilbert and Patrick Hsu labs presents a new way to insert large DNA sequences into the genome using engineered recombinases that donβt require DNA cutting or rely on the cell's repair machinery.

A human-specific regulatory mechanism revealed in a pre-implantation model
Nature - Genetic manipulation of blastoids reveals the role of recently emerged transposable elements and genes in human development.
Today in @nature.com, we present our work leveraging functional genomics and human blastoids to uncover a human-specific mechanism in preimplantation development driven by the endogenous retrovirus HERVK.
Special thanks to the reviewers whose comments improved our manuscript a lot! rdcu.be/eI3tD
