Dupré: 3 Preludes & Fugues, Op. 7: No. 1 in B Major
YouTube video by John Scott - Topic
Marcel Dupré wrote frankly too much music and it’s a lot to wade through but some of it is terrific like this piece… of versions I’ve heard, this is the most impressively played to my ears; I do find the recording a bit too recessed in the effort to be “natural” sounding youtu.be/ws27pYobx6Q?...

I’m so high man holy shit
I’m listening to the Respighi “Roman trilogy” (Pines/Fountains/Festivals) and sure it’s mostly vulgar splashy nationalist-realist trash but it’s also fun to listen to and brilliantly orchestrated if you want to hear a great band show off - The BSO was and is world-class

One of the best recordings of this (which is saying something because it’s been recorded 50000 times) - perfectly paced and the playing is outrageously fantastic… first choice … YouTube link in reply

Arthur Honegger was a great composer and these are some particularly great records of his music … a key feature of his music, is the sense of insistent forward movement and momentum, not unlike Sibelius (but in a much different tonal and timbral language)

Two of the greatest artists of the 20th century… also two of the most idiosyncratic pianists; the elder CLEARLY had a major influence on the younger … idiot critics who don’t understand shit from shinola and think Monk fell out of a coconut tree don’t understand how special this is. Precious stuff.

This is a piece (Bartok’s Concrrto for Orchestra) I’m especially fond of and there are several great recordings of it … but this is the one I love best - Bernstein and New York. The finale is great, he really stirs them up and it’s exciting as hell with great playing from the orchestra soloists

More 20th century French stuff I enjoy - Darius Milhaud; classic recording and the early days stereo has held up incredibly well. Sounds lovely. This is one of dozens upon dozens of great vintage albums from Charles Münch and the BSO - traditionally the US’s most “French” orchestra

He redid it again later and it was just pretty good, nothing special but this Seiji Ozawa 1970 Stravinsky “Rite of Spring” with the fearsome Chicago Symphony Orchestra is pretty fantastic… the brass and wind playing here is great, they make a hell of a racket but nail everything …

組曲「ハーリ・ヤーノシュ」 "Háry János" Suite コダーイ Kodály (Rec. 1969)
YouTube video by HohHoh MeeMee
Some person was kind enough to upload in its entirety the definitive 1969 recording of Kodaly’s “Hary Janos” suite by The Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of George Szell … the piece makes generous use of a Cimbalom in the 3rd and 4th movements youtu.be/XcGgjN9hHvM?...

After this interminable conference call ends, I’m going to smoke a joint and listen to Manuel de Falla’s ballet “El Sombrero de Tres Picos” (The Three Cornered Hat), here performed in 1964 in lovely sound by the Philharmonia under De Burgos… I just adore this shit, can’t resist it

RCA “Living Presence” era album cover featuring the legendary Juilliard Quartet posing uncomfortably as if in mid-performance in front of a light blue backdrop
EMI’s (Warner’s) marginally more tasteful “Great Recordings of the Century” album cover featuring an impressionistic portrait instead of a goofy picture of the poor guys from the equally large Alban Berg Quartett pretending to play
My two favorite recordings of the Debussy and Ravel string quartets … this is the early 60s Juilliard Quartet performance which is just flat-out better than the 80s remake. The Berg Quartett’s album is also coupled to some additional Stravinsky. The playing by both groups is 🤌; classics both
