I’m listening to the Respighi “Roman trilogy” (Pines/Fountains/Festivals) and sure it’s mostly vulgar splashy nationalist-realist trash but it’s also fun to listen to and brilliantly orchestrated if you want to hear a great band show off - The BSO was and is world-class

Arthur Honegger was a great composer and these are some particularly great records of his music … a key feature of his music, is the sense of insistent forward movement and momentum, not unlike Sibelius (but in a much different tonal and timbral language)

This is a piece (Bartok’s Concrrto for Orchestra) I’m especially fond of and there are several great recordings of it … but this is the one I love best - Bernstein and New York. The finale is great, he really stirs them up and it’s exciting as hell with great playing from the orchestra soloists
Listening to the Honegger performances here from Bernstein … excellent, exciting takes with fine solo playing by the first chairs … I absolutely love this music
More 20th century French stuff I enjoy - Darius Milhaud; classic recording and the early days stereo has held up incredibly well. Sounds lovely. This is one of dozens upon dozens of great vintage albums from Charles Münch and the BSO - traditionally the US’s most “French” orchestra
He redid it again later and it was just pretty good, nothing special but this Seiji Ozawa 1970 Stravinsky “Rite of Spring” with the fearsome Chicago Symphony Orchestra is pretty fantastic… the brass and wind playing here is great, they make a hell of a racket but nail everything …

My two favorite recordings of the Debussy and Ravel string quartets … this is the early 60s Juilliard Quartet performance which is just flat-out better than the 80s remake. The Berg Quartett’s album is also coupled to some additional Stravinsky. The playing by both groups is 🤌; classics both
