It is really weird to me when people don’t like reading and books.

I get not having enough time to read. I get wanting to read more, but there are just too many distractions around you. Obviously, I get having disabilities that make it difficult to read.

But just not liking books? Who are you?

ALA 150th Life Membership A special offer for our anniversary year - save money and support ALA by becoming a Life Member

At the end of the episode, I give a plug for the ALA 150th Life Membership. Did ALA pay me for this solicitation? No. No, they did not. I just spontaneously dropped it in there when I was recording the outro.

After you listen, if you're a member of ALA, vote in the election!

If you're not a member of ALA, cross your fingers and hope the person you like the best wins (or join?).

What are your favorite humor podcasts? I like a wide variety of things, from Conan O’Brien to Hello from the Magic Tavern, but looking for something new to make me laugh.

Who would've guessed that these two messages from @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social and @heykellyjensen.bsky.social would have been posted around the same time this morning?

To close out February, what are your romance takes? Either real life or fictional? Or both!

Here is mine, and all of you will hate it...

Friends to lovers should just stay friends. JUST STAY FRIENDS!

Of course, secret baby troops don't fill me with incandescent rage so....

You?

Magneto always had a strange connection to mental powers, like he could send astral projections in early issues of X-Men.

The protection from telepathy is definitely the writers of the X-Men movies getting his helmet confused with Juggernaut's, and then the comics slavishly following suit.

I met my wife when we worked at the same bookstore, but I don't know that "young people working in retail" counts as a real workplace romance??

(Plus, we didn't start dating until after she had quit to go to grad school.)

I wonder why librarians spent so much energy going hard for DEI to make the profession predominantly female but decided to leave it overwhelmingly white??

An emergency room, well-stocked with equipment and medications should be the most important room in any hospital. Doctors and nurses to go with it, a welcome extra.

My son says that he is Dustin, my daughter is Eleven, and my wife is Barb. He doesn't know who I am. I guess that's better than him saying I'm the Demogorgon?

I have started watching STRANGER THINGS for the first time. My kids are watching with me, but my wife is unsure if it is too scary for her. We're 3-4 episodes in, and I'm enjoying it so far.

I just came up with a great succinct description for a new book club we're looking to launch at my branch:

"Encourage reading while building community through conversation"

16.02.2026 15:22 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Assisting patrons will absolutely involve saying, "Don't use it for this or that purpose," but is "don't" really the extent of our engagement?

15.02.2026 15:32 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

However, I also know that I have library patrons who are curious and are already using generative AI.

Is it not my duty to assist my community in understanding and learning about this technology, rather than giving them a speech about my professional ethics and refusing to engage with AI?

15.02.2026 15:30 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I am concerned about AI usage in schools, libraries, and workplaces, particularly where it degrades people's abilities to reason and develop their own worldviews. I hate that anyone would use it as a replacement for a human artist or creator.

15.02.2026 15:30 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I am pragmatic about AI. I am open to anti-AI arguments around sustainability and the unethical methods used to train their models. I am critical of many of the ways that AI is being used and believe that most of the hype around the technology is purely to juice the stock of companies like OpenAI.
