Watching doc about resilience that reaffirms many changes I made last few years to my mental outlook (I read a LOT of brain books). Brains are hallucination engines. If the story is the world is shit, everything is fucked, brain reframes every interaction this way. It impacts behavior; shuts us down

Margaret Weis, co-creator of the Dragonlance series, expressed her excitement for Toon Second Edition by saying –

"Every Saturday my TSR friends, my kids, and I would get together to play games. Having worked with D&D all week, the last RPG we wanted to play was D&D."

Hi all, I know I'm not here much but I wanted to let you know that I finally delivered a draft of the NAVOLA sequel to my editor. Still some work to do, but the book is finally fully written.

Have you read the short story "Pump Six" by @paolobacigalupi.bsky.social ?

It's the future we're headed for if we continue to let education wither on the vine.

It should be available. Not sure why it's not. :\

Clean geothermal energy to heat and cool Chicago homes: 'An example for the entire country' You can heat homes with gas, propane, oil or electricity. Or you can make use of the virtually endless supply of clean energy that lies right beneath your feet.

Some #goodnews for your week: Geothermal energy project from the South Side non-profit Blacks for Green could heat and cool Chicago.
(Reminds me of one of my favorite @paolobacigalupi.bsky.social short stories).

I believe I'm on track to have it done this year, assuming I stay mentally healthy.

Those were great. I tracked down the paperbacks. So obviously a different cultural and publishing environment. Like, grimdark if it meant it.

Lol. Townie Books in Crested Butte, Colorado can do that. I pass through and sign things for them fairly often.

I’m currently in a hotel next to Fenway Park. There’s a heated pool! But I’ve signed a stack of The Book of Love pb at Porter Square Books, another stack at Harvard Bookstore, & tomorrow am I drop by Brookline Booksmith to sign there. So if you’re in Boston & want a signed copy, you’ve got options.

This is why a lot of kids stop reading. We force "nutritious" books down their throats, instead of indulging them wildly on books they enjoy.

Also, the fun and subversively silly books seem to evaporate in upper grade levels.

If books taste like oatmeal, a wise person will play video games.

I bet folks in Beijing already have their hands hurt from popping up champagne all the time as America voluntarily barbarizes its own global soft power instruments that particularly made it a superpower and won the Cold War.

This weekend I've decided to finally read Balaji Srinivasan's terrible fucking book, "The Network State."

I've put this off for as long as I possibly could. Here goes.

Weak men cannot compromise. Weak men cannot build consensus. Weak men think that leadership means force. Weak men build nothing that lasts.

Here's last night's driving thread, for your reading pleasure. There's a polyamorous pirate, a drunk birthday chemist, and cheating on a quiz with ChatGPT.

It's messy.

The Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have today fully decoupled their energy grid from Russia. At the moment they are running in an island mode, but starting tomorrow the energy grid will be reconnected with the European Union.

What's going to happen to Ukraine now? The most likely scenario is some form of Finlandization.

"This... idea that powerful nations deserve to be able to conquer weaker ones unopposed, and that regular people defending their homes and families are worthy of contempt β€” was an utterly shameful display, and largely failed to convince the American people." MAGA went along, though [Noah Smith]
