(2) The government must:
➡️Carry out a full impact assessment to show the impact of these changes
➡️Have a debate and vote on these changes
➡️Scrap the retrospective application of these changes so that it does not apply to those who are already on their path to settlement’

(1) Yesterday, hundreds of us attended parliament for a mass lobby against the government's new #earnedsettlement proposal. These proposals will have a disproportionate impact on survivors of trafficking and modern slavery, and even increase the risk of re-trafficking.

Mahmood’s move to make asylum temporary ‘may undermine refugee convention’ Law Society says home secretary’s review of refugee status after 30 months is in tension with UK’s legal obligations

⚠️The Law Society warns the Home Secretary’s plan to review refugee status after 30 months risks breaching the UK’s legal obligations.

Yesterday, the Government announced radical changes to the asylum system – changes that will divide communities & cause torture survivors to relive their trauma.

Refugee status can be a gateway to a new life. But now survivors have to live through the terror that they'll be sent back to torturers.

In denying refugees the safety they need to be part of our communities, this Government has shown it's grossly out of sync with the public.

These reforms will only leave refugees marginalised as they struggle to find homes, jobs & education.

We must reject this cynical politics of scapegoating.

Refugee families who have survived war and persecution will now face renewed uncertainty every 30 months. Refugees should be able to put down roots: settle into communities, learn English and find work.

Our analysis also shows this new workload will cost up to £725 million over the first 10 years.

The UK needs a fair and humane system, where people feel safe and have support and stability to recover and rebuild their lives.

Refugee status to be temporary as Shabana Mahmood rips up rules on UK asylum Home secretary announces 30-month protection limit, with refugees required to leave if their home countries are later judged safe

This cruel and draconian change condemns people seeking safety, including survivors of war, torture and human trafficking to a life in limbo.

Safety shouldn’t come with an expiry date.

Refugee status becomes temporary in asylum shake-up Adults and accompanied children claiming asylum will only receive refugee status for 30 months under the changes.

Protection should mean the chance to rebuild your life in safety. Refugees have already lost home and community. What they need next is stability.

Instead, this government is putting a countdown on their safety - deliberately keeping people in limbo.

This is an attack on our fundamental rights, and another divisive, scapegoating policy that tears at our communities and solves nothing. It must be reversed.

Everyone deserves the chance to settle, rebuild and put down roots, not face a life in limbo.

(5/5) Stats also show a record number of people showing signs of modern slavery declined referral to the NRM. Reasons include fear of authorities, lack of self-identification, confusion about the system, and immigration concerns, all of which are exacerbated by harmful government rhetoric.

(4/5) This striking difference raises many questions about the Competent Authority position within an Immigration Enforcement body and how this impacts decision-making. The creation of the IECA in 2021 was a regressive step, and we urge the Home Office to return to a single competent authority

(3/5) We are concerned that there remains a vast difference between the percentage of positive decisions issued by the Immigration Enforcement Competent Authority and the Single Competent Authority: 43% to 70% in 2025.

(2/5) However, with the number of reconsiderations of negative decisions increasing year on year, we must also remind the Home Office that speed should never be prioritised over quality decision-making. Survivors deserve a system that makes timely and correct decisions.

(1/5) It’s encouraging to see the reduction in the backlog over the decision-making process for identifying survivors of human trafficking and slavery. The slight improvement in positive decision-making is also welcome...

When immigration status has to be 'earned', exploitation becomes easier. Longer, conditional routes to settlement don’t just create insecurity; they give exploitative employers more power and silence survivors. Read more: www.atleu.org.uk/cases-news/e...
