I had never realized that the mushrooms linked all the other plants together with this underground network of mycelium. My art director, Yazz Alali, and I felt it was a fitting visual for songs dedicated to the musical community Iβve become a part of here in LA. Full video is at the link in my bio!
When I was recording these songs, I was recording them at night, in a darkened house, on a darkened street. The theme of mushrooms seemed perfect because theyβre nocturnal, and I had been reading about mushrooms and their root systems.
I recently put out an EP of three songs from my new solo piano album, 'good night, los angeles.' These songs are accompanied by a beautiful animated (mushroom-themed) video, created by my friend Sarah Nelson.
Not even I knew this!
Grammy #4, and still the same astonished feeling as the other three times. Thank you @jonbatiste.bsky.social and thanks to all the brilliant collaborators who have helped me along in my search for inspiration and a great melody and a good laugh.
Another year in the young and extremely eventful life of βSomeone Like You,β which Adele and I wrote over a couple of days in early 2010 and which came out here in America a year later. Happy birthday to a life-changing song and collaboration. Thank you to Adele and the gods of songwriting!

It might seem "unromantic" to write a song for the explicit purpose of getting the audience involved at your shows. But once you're working on it, youβll forget your initial hesitation. Itβll be fun. Later when youβre playing a gig, youβll be happy to have a bunch of songs that get the crowd going.
good night, moorpark.

Productivity is overrated. Youβre not manufacturing a product. Youβre writing songs. Youβre hunting for inspiration, youβre seeking a new way of looking at life. This message that you must be productive as an artist - where do you think it comes from?
