I’ve never bought the idea that Gary Neville gave his Churchill speech, we all rose up and defeated the football elite and the Super League forever. Because if that were true, we would’ve stopped Qatar, sportswashing, City Football Group, Rio Ferdinand’s punditry aka everything ruining football.
The last counter revolution we had in football (ending the super league) happened bc enough elites (fifa, broadcasters, governments) weren’t cut in on the deal and united to oppose the unpopular new league.
If we want to mobilize the tournament to oppose Trump, it will take an elite (in media, govt, biz) that is willing and able to do so. I don’t think we have it.

I think it’s why they rush so much stuff knowing it’s gonna get overturned in court. Once it’s in motion, it’s hard to go back when you’re dealing with something as impenetrable as government.

I think it’s also an outgrowth of metrics/moneyball culture. The idea that everything can be measured empirically and that those measures should guide all decision making. the social benefits of schooling are heard to measure but test scores can be.

The reasoning I always use to defend the liberal arts, but also education more broadly: The brain is a muscle and school is weight training. LeBron has never had to curl a 40lb dumbbell on the court, but if he never did, he’d be a worse basketball player. It’s training you for a variety of cases.
