Everything that happens in Star Wars, good and bad, happens because George Lucas is kinda weird.

Like you throw muppets and samurai and ww2 fighter pilots into a blender and you get the biggest movie ever.

Sometimes you do all that and get the Phantom Menace. You take the good with the bad.

I think we run into too left/too mod debates so often bc it’s how networks make content and consultants make money.

I think Zohran showed that there isn’t a broad appetite for moderation, but one for enthusiasm. You can be an enthusiastic moderate but that wasn’t the β€˜24 campaign.

Another aspect of boomers owning the culture for a bit too long is that β€œwhen I was a kid” always means the 50s.

Like it’s not just that it’s an unrealistic image, it’s that it’s an unrealistic image most living Americans weren’t alive for.

I hate what it did to the Super League. Like the arc ends with a big Sorkin speech about β€˜the spirit of the game’ meanwhile it’s the direction we’ve been going for 30 odd years.

Just an oversimplified preemptive victory about an existential crisis for the sport.

Anything but blaming the owners.

Because the second that happens, he’ll sign a podcast deal in conservative media land and make his current salary in a week talking about how β€œthe left” have taken over the party and whatever else is on the cue cards.

Book it.

It’s a funny phenomena where the stuff from 0-20 years ago is cool, vintage older cousin stuff but media that’s 25+ years old is old, outdated, my parents stuff, etc.

I think it happens most often with music bc of how much time-specific the medium is. Like you hear grunge and instantly think 1994.

It’s why Stranger Things is offputting, everything that references the 80s is straight off the shelves.

In That 70s Show, I like how it’s pretty clear that the kitchen hasn’t been updated since the 60s and Red still has a 50s haircut. Some people don’t change!

Can definitely see that with his musical taste both the Broadway-inspired songs in family guy and the Sinatra type stuff he records.

I think we often ignore how stuff like reruns and syndication can extend the nostalgia lifespan for some properties.

It’s marketing. He’s sending a message out to a crowd that it’s β€œfor them”. Almost like some kind of signal of virtue πŸ™ƒ.

You gotta sell tickets. Game is game.

I’ve never bought the idea that Gary Neville gave his Churchill speech, we all rose up and defeated the football elite and the Super League forever. Because if that were true, we would’ve stopped Qatar, sportswashing, City Football Group, Rio Ferdinand’s punditry aka everything ruining football.

02.03.2026 19:48 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The last counter revolution we had in football (ending the super league) happened bc enough elites (fifa, broadcasters, governments) weren’t cut in on the deal and united to oppose the unpopular new league.

If we want to mobilize the tournament to oppose Trump, it will take an elite (in media, govt, biz) that is willing and able to do so. I don’t think we have it.

Pre draft, his goal was to get to a second contract. None of this was surprising. The best thing that ever happened to the Pacers was the Suns’ matching their offer sheet.

I think it also made flattery much much easier. Elites finding validation from idealogues who used them to rise up the ranks of power. See: Bari Weiss.

I think it’s why they rush so much stuff knowing it’s gonna get overturned in court. Once it’s in motion, it’s hard to go back when you’re dealing with something as impenetrable as government.

There’s a reason it took until Biden to pull out of Afghanistan and why it kinda killed his presidency.

I think it’s also an outgrowth of metrics/moneyball culture. The idea that everything can be measured empirically and that those measures should guide all decision making. the social benefits of schooling are heard to measure but test scores can be.

It’s the same phenomena that gave us looksmaxing

The reasoning I always use to defend the liberal arts, but also education more broadly: The brain is a muscle and school is weight training. LeBron has never had to curl a 40lb dumbbell on the court, but if he never did, he’d be a worse basketball player. It’s training you for a variety of cases.
