i used to feel stupid for watching movies that were considered classics and not really "getting" them
and some of that is due to pretentious critics looking down on less experienced audiences, sure
but just as much, it's because a sense of uncertainty is the point, and you're meant to sit with it
one of the most important lessons i learned that no one ever explicitly taught me about media:
how something makes you feel while reading/watching/listening to it is just as important as the factual information it's communicating

I'd also just like to point out that hosting a party "at SXSW" basically just means "in Austin"
the event takes over the whole city! I've been to countless events at parties that are "at SXSW" that have nothing to do with SXSW or its venues because that's just how you brand shit during the event
and I get it. if you're not from here, it sure feels distasteful to "support the local economy" of a place that's doing shitty things
but unless you've got a specific aim with your boycotts, that "local economy" is my queer community, too

i truly do not understand how people can see that the united states as a whole has been overtaken by an unpopular minority and that queer/marginalized folks deserve support to effect change, not blanket abandonment
