Spain spent 6 years investing heavily in wind and solar energy, now has some of cheapest power prices in Europe

Ember: 2020-2024 Spain cut its power sector import bill more than any other EU country & avoided 26bn cubic metres of gas imports costing €13.5bn

Reaching net zero by 2050 β€˜cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

And we're now on our 2nd crisis in 4 years. Suspect we're going to continue having crises until the last LNG tanker docks.

Great to hear that Incredible Edible Ludlow are still doing good things. Orchards are such a good idea. Benefits for local food, climate resilience, reducing food risk, biodiversity. I could go on. We should also grow more nuts. I'm arranging a talk with nut growing experts in April

Dirty Business on C4 was absolutely brilliant and fucking terrifying. It’s imperative we re-nationalise our water companies otherwise the greedy bastards will kill us all.

A new study suggests that applying biochar to rewetted peatlands could increase carbon dioxide removal efficiency by about 30 percent and even make lower stability biochars highly effective for long term carbon storage.

UK must double down on renewables as wars drive up energy costs, experts say Fossil fuel price surge after US-Israeli attacks on Iran prompts calls to end dependence on β€˜volatile’ energy source * Middle East crisis live – latest updates The UK government must double down on its clean energy drive to protect bill payers from increasingly volatile fossil fuel markets in the wake of the US-Israel war on Iran, climate groups, academics and energy experts have warned. Research published on Thursday shows that the last fossil fuel energy crisis, caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, cost the EU and the UK $1.8tn between 2022 and 2025, driving up bills and fuelling a devastating cost of living crisis. 3D printing with Carbon negative biochar. This is the sort of stuff that excites me. What if most of the materials we use in daily life stored atmospheric carbon rather than be a source of it or be made of fossil carbon.

This is the most important thing happening in the world right now.

Trump and Hegseth want killer drones + mass surveillance of Americans.

Anthropic refuses to build it. While most tech companies fall in line, they are prepared to pay the price for their principles.

It was indeed. It's incredible how terra preta is still fertile after all this time. There are lots of misconceptions about biochar in agriculture. Poor results are usually because people use low quality biochar and/or keep using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. My compost loves it

Biochar can help. Ideally activated biochar. I spoke to a guy from Morocco last year who is feeding small amounts to livestock. They charge the biochar and disperse it to gradually boost degraded soils

The sooner we remove our reliance on fossil fuels and petrochemicals the better. And that is something government and individuals can do.

This sort of thing is why people are understandably not coming to the US. I would be really surprised if the expected international crowds arrive for the World Cup, at least at the US venues. Maybe some diehard fans will come. But the risk is just too great.

The low cost biochar water filters at Woodtek need replacing having successfully filled farmyard run-off for the last 3 months. The pool this leads to is so clean that it's used for wild swimming. Not many farmers would swim in farm run-off

20% biochar with 80% fine grade chipped tree (including leaves, branches, roots) makes perfect bedding for livestock. The biochar adsorbs urine preventing release of ammonia. So cattle sheds have no smell and all that useful nitrogen is kept for use as a fertilizer

The UK government didn't want you to see this report on ecosystem collapse. I'm not surprised | George Monbiot It took an FOI request to bring this national security assessment to light. For β€˜doomsayers’ like us, it is the ultimate vindication, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Please spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem.
Thank you.

They use 25% biochar with 75% 'woodfines' - which is the fine fraction removed from processing whole-tree wood chip. This is placed in the feeding areas where most urination happens. It's cleared out every few weeks, composted for a few weeks then applied to land

Students and lecturers from @harperadamsuni.bsky.social in a cow shed near Welshpool. There's virtually no smell here as the bedding is infused with biochar. Valuable nitrogen in the urea isn't lost to the atmosphere as harmful ammonia but held by the biochar. So no extra fertilizer needed.
