“This is cause for great joy, even though for a little while you may have had to suffer trials of many kinds. Even gold passes through the assayer’s fire, and much more precious than perishable gold is faith which stands the test. These trials come so that your faith may prove itself worthy of all praise, glory, and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.” – 1 Peter 1:6–7 (REB)

A slide from my lecture today on Congolese Student Activism and Cold War Histories featuring a photo of Patrice Lumumba.
Wish me luck for lecture today. Teaching a very important history. And working on a very important skill (comparisons). Indebted to the work of @pedro-monaville.bsky.social.

Applied to both the Barth unit and the Reformed Theology and History unit. Both themes in the CFP seemed oddly relevant and related.

Today, informed people are watching the war in Iran & the trade issues its causing. Historians are talking about reliving the mid-1970s with oil shocks & stagflation, while it feels like most Americans haven't registered how bad it could get.

It feels like Spring 2020. Informed people saw the Covid virus coming. I warned students Japan had closed its schools & that this was possible in the US. We bought groceries for a possible lock down while the clerk looked at us like we were crazy. Then over spring break the whole world changed.

NYTimes frames Talarico's rhetoric as a "declaration of war" against conservative Christianity here, but if that's the case, he arguably declared it years ago.
This is a bit unusual in politics: his rhetoric on this hasn't changed much since I spoke to him in 2023: religionnews.com/2023/05/10/s...

68% of 'connected' American Jews support the US-Israel war against Iran, survey finds - Jewish Telegraphic Agency
The results suggest U.S. Jews are more supportive than Americans overall but less than Israeli Jews.
The first poll that claims to determine what American Jews think about the Iran War actually only polled "connected" US Jews, meaning they constructed their universe of respondents so as to produce a desired result - and still only got two-thirds support for the war. www.jta.org/2026/03/09/i...

I find this style of writing detestable. Do not misunderstand—moralism is an art form, literally! We used to have people called “moralists” who wrote these things called “books.” Whatever the heck this is, I’m not sure. We need a moratorium on this liberal use of the second person.

Now reading. Baker has been tremendously influential for my thinking on the concept of the "revolution" in general, especially the idea of "revolutionary scripts."

Ursula von der Leyen faces blowback over diplomatic ‘overreach’
As the Iran conflict enters its second week, national diplomats say the European Commission president is overstepping her role and wading onto their turf.
“EU officials and lawmakers…criticized what they described as the European Commission president’s diplomatic overreach. Disapproval of her handling of the Iran crisis comes on top of carping about other foreign policy issues….”

O beloved one, cast your gaze upon us. / Is this easy? / Is it a small thing not to behold you? / Is it a light matter not to see you in Masjid al-Sahla? / Like so many others who have been swallowed up by the life of this world, / I find myself growing accustomed to your absence.
