The missile swarm that most doctrines and strategists were worried about has been replaced with drone swarms. Expect future air defense systems contractors to spend lots of time developing cheap anti drone interceptors and electronic warfare. It’s an evolutionary arms race.
Even at a 10% hit rate, they can make 200/day of the non rocket ones and carry nearly 2x the payload. It’s outmatched every similar drone in destructive capability/cost and range. It’s the same problem the US has had with defending against drones, the costs of defending are magnitudes higher.
Modern tanks weren’t designed to counter slow but agile anti tank rounds that can pin point target the gap between the turret and the platform and other weak points. It’s caught the world by surprise and caused an anti drone defense arms race.
The drones in Ukraine are upending the math of military doctrines. Cheap drone swarms take out million $ tanks. There’s even a deadly drone wall Ukraine has deployed. Russia keeps trying and failing to counter drones for more than a few weeks at a time before Ukraine adapts.
They’re still expensive at $500k or so per heavier version, it’s still 4 cruise drones for the price of 1 tomahawk. These things can also be harder to intercept. It’s worrying that the future of warfare may have even heavier casualties as this tech proliferates.
It’s funny you say that because that’s exactly what they’re doing but with metal for the rocket and jet engines. They’re making cruise missile/drone hybrids that are hard to predict because of their varied flight pattern ability. They’ve made a 4x cheaper cruise drone vs tomahawks missiles.

What’s interesting from the Ukraine war is the evolution of drones on the front lines. Drones are taking out tanks, helicopters, etc. Not much is safe from them in Ukraine. There’s drone vs drone combat.
It’s changing tank development and doctrine.
From what I have read on it, the EU and US railgun programs shared their extensive research with Japan. I don’t know exactly what sharing may entail in the future but it’s likely allies will share the technology as it matures.

Actually the Japanese railgun was built with collaboration from engineers in American and European programs. Lasers are and have been researched constantly in the US for decades. It’s the drones that have been such a curveball. They’re cheap vs missiles and the Ukrainian pilots are exceptional.
Ukrainian villages are covered in cables used to power drones as they fly around. Drone v drone arial dogfights. Drones are replacing stealth helicopter development contracts.
