Classics riders: very good at an isolated effort on one specific day, recovery is irrelevant
GC/Tour riders: very good at repeated efforts for 1 - 3 weeks, ie, very good at recovering.
Combine the latter with the attributes you need for a race to find the rider type that’d usually do well there.
Puncheur: peak 5 - 10 min power is supreme, on the lighter side, bike handling is secondary, short climb -> short descent
climber: high 20 - 60 min power AND very light, bike handling is nice to have, lang climb = long descent
versatile sprinters: 30 sec power is lower but still high, can hold an effort for 5 - 10 though, lower in weight, also good bike handlers.
TT/Rouleur: High 20 - 60 min power but no punch, relatively heavy (Remco is an outlier), the best are usually also good bike handlers, like Cancellara.
If you want something more hands on, to me it’s a combination of power curve, weight and bike handling skills.
e.g., sprinters have a really big peak for 30 sec - 2 mins, are relatively heavy and usually good bike handlers.
