I would caution that "democrat strategists" should focus on accurate polls. While I agree with you on the midterms, I also think Trump's base makes things closer than I would like.

Iran has not been an empire for about 2,000 years.
The general officers and naval admirals who remain with Trump as his direct staff must be quite inept. The competent ones have resigned or were fired.
US laws are meaningless unless the party in power has the will to use those laws, as the POTUS is not considered an average citizen. The Republican Party is currently in command of both the House and Senate, pending midterm elections.

This would be a major escalation, and if they are able to get the mines out in any significant numbers, opening the strait would be a longer affair than it currently has the possibility of being.
