Since my kids have grown, I read a LOT. This year was no different. I read fiction, non-fiction and in particular, science themed non-fiction in form of physical books, ebooks & audiobooks.

This type of information was incredibly hard to find when I was an international student starting out with scicomm. I’m so glad TON is investing effort into this — we need global scientists to improve how we talk about science!

The first question of a knowledge check questionnaire in the class BIO 320/620: Microbial Ecology and Evolution. When asked to describe microbial ecology to a friend who isn’t taking the class, the student responded “you really can’t, it’s too complicated!”

Either a huge win for me as an instructor or an elegant way to dodge this question.

Sometimes I think about why there aren’t a ton of older gay men who could be role models for younger generations and then I remember that it’s because an epidemic wiped them all out. A day late but #WorldAidsDay is still a necessary and relevant reminder

The internet tells me that putting a pothos cutting in the same water will make a ZZ cutting root faster. #plantsky is this true?! I’m inclined to believe it as an ecologist.. but WHY?

Huh, I think this is the first time I’ve seen an article retracted for lack of ethics committee permissions.
