Ah, you have chosen the hard route of lore building. It's far more rewarding when you work it out. You mentioned the beard as part of the species sign of maturity. On Will it shows like a beard, but for his mother maybe it's just a few whisps of her fur that shows more edgy around the lower back jaw
They don't necessarily have to match. I don't know how in-depth you've already thought about this but there could be sexual dimorphism for them, where the males and females of the same species have different traits.
