Finding myself more & more sympathetic to Mark Fisher's thinking on cultural stagnation lol
There're so many (now legacy) 00s/10s "indie" artists that are just absolutely tedious now. For ex, a new James Blake LP in 2011 would've been appmt listening for me - now I can't even bother bc I don't think he has anything to say.
I can't recall a year like this for music so far where I've been so ~unmove~d by the release calendar this far into the year.
(Could also be that I'm just an unc now, I guess, too lol)
But seriously - my most anticipated album of 2026 so far doesn't come out until May and it's Broken Social Scene
Good reporting in "The Verge" by Josh Dzieza.
"Laid-off lawyers, history PhDs, and scientists are now part of a miserable gig economy in which theyβre teaching AI how to do their old jobs."

Kinda wanna start a Michael Harris reading group this summer...
I don't think grammarly should just get to do "sorry deleting now" after ventriloquizing living and dead people without their consent to make money
Picture of smiling man with a blue collared shirt on the right. On the left, a block of white text on a teal background that says "Ontario's universities are being run on gig work - and students are paying the price. Read the op-ed by OCUFA President Rob Kirstofferson". The OCUFA logo appear on the bottom right.
Today is OCUFA's Day of Action in support of #fairness4CF.
#ONPSE is increasingly being run on gig-style academic work, a result of years of provincial underfunding. The system is under strain, and students and faculty feel the impact.

Excerpt from a new article in the "Wall Street Journal" ("AI Isnβt Lightening Workloads. Itβs Making Them More Intense." - https://archive.ph/mmPNa) "AI is increasing the speed, density and complexity of work rather than reducing it, according to an analysis of 164,000 workersβ digital work activity. The data, from workforce analytics and productivity-tracking software company ActivTrak, covers more than 443 million hours of work across 1,111 employers, making it one of the biggest studies of AIβs effects on work habits to date."

Precariously employed contract faculty teach almost 50% of university courses in Ontario with little job security or institutional support. OCUFA is holding a Social Media Day of Action to call for fair, stable working conditions for contract faculty.

Song came up at trivia tonight. Extremely 2003-coded!

Interesting to see this new editorial (www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....) by Luci Pangrazio (one of the authors of "Critical Data Literacies") ? the applicability of the "literacy" paradigm to AI.
Feels v similar to what I was trying to get at in my CAPAL24 talk (doi.org/10.60770/36Y6-3562).
Really good piece, as expected from @samleecole.bsky.social !
Really great, accessible series of videos! Thanks for sharing.
I'm creating a series of short form videos about how language models work technically. The goal is to be something in between "you know it's next token prediction" and "now you've taken a machine learning class." I'd love your thoughts so here are the first few! π§΅

Lucinda Williams' 1988 self-titled album on vinyl with sticker featuring pull-quotes from Stephen Holden and Steve Pond for "NYTimes" and "Rolling Stone"
Insane grip from earlier today! Never seen this in the wild before.
Still has the wrap with the "NYTimes" and "Rolling Stones" pull quotes from Stephen Holden and Steve Pond!!!
Sometimes I think this is my fav Dylan song just because you get to hear him sing "The buyin' power of the proletariat's gone down / Money's gettin' shallow and weak" lol

SZA to i_D on the rise of AI-generated music:
βItβs happening disproportionately with Black music. Why am I hearing AI covers of Olivia Dean, when Olivia Dean just came the f*ck out? She canβt even collect the streams.β
Cannot really articulate adequately how excited I am for Quinn Slobodian's new book on "Muskism" lol

It's really crazy-making! But thanks for the additional context. Maybe I'll try Zotero as you've suggested...
Hopefully Tom Skinner got a bag lol
That new ~electronic~ Harry Styles just sounds like he was trying to remake "The King of Limbs" to me lol
