We have a change in venue for next Saturdayβs Save Our Swifts talk, the halls renovations arenβt finishing as swiftly as hoped for. We will be along the road at the Methodist Chapel now @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social
Our beloved Barn Owl are gearing up for spring.
Pairs are bonding, and yesβ¦ theyβre giving our recently installed boxes the once-over (no pressure, lads). Males are out hunting to impress. Romance, owl-style π¦
Weβre keeping everything crossed for a good year ahead.

Save Our Suffolk Swifts have this talk Saturday week in Peasenhall. Learn about Swifts, their plight and how easy it is to help them. There has been amazing Swift conservation at this venue, nest sites protected and many Swift boxes added. @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social

Ventured into west Suffolk early morning: singing Woodlarks were up with the larks. Also Crossbills, Redpoll sp. and Siskins.
An embarrassingly dreadful shot of one of a group of Tree Sparrows. The bird itself was quite sharp

We were at Love Our Planet Discovery Day at Christchurch Mansion today.
Tiny bones everywhere, wide-eyed kids, brave parents, and more βooooh thatβs a skull!β than you could shake a femur at.
Nothing says family fun like dissecting what a barn owl had for tea π¦

I've been trying to get this old Knot with faded flag read all season- finally brought it to book in the last of the light this eve as it pottered about in the godwit roost behind the Co-op. Turns out it is my old mucker LUP ringed as a 3CY+ in 2009. So now in at least its 20th year. #ornithology
New owl flat going up β luxury box edition, tucked inside a barn. Warm, dry, five-star. π¦β¨

Putting up owl boxes is brilliant β and weβre doing lots of that β but boxes alone arenβt enough. An owl box without good habitat is a bit like a house without a fridgeβ¦ thereβs nothing to eat! Rough grass, field margins and fewer poisons make all the difference π¦πΎ @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
Straying off topic, apologies. These #Suffolk Coast/Heath National Landscape funded Redstart nest boxes are destined for suitable habitat along the coast. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social have more NL funded Spotted Flycatcher and Redstart nest boxes available, please do enquire.
SOSSwifts have βinheritedβ the RH pile of buff and red coloured #Swift boxes, they have a 20mm stand off at the back for a bonus bat space too. We will happily donate these to #Suffolk locations where Swifts nest already, or next door. @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
Another nest box made by our wonderful volunteer John and now up in place π Fingers crossed itβs just in time for owls to approve and move in this year π¦π€ @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
Indeed a sad loss. Andrew's great photos graced The Harrier in many issues along with some interesting articles #SuffolkBirds
Suffolk Bird Group have these excellent talks next Thursday 29th, Save Our Suffolk Swifts will be there with nest boxes, we can have a swift Swift chat for guidance in a break. @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
Pete and I counted 185 Corn Buntings into roost at Hockwold Washes this evening. They roosted in Suffolk but virtually all flew over Norfolk to drop into roost. One Water Pipit too

Huge thanks to our volunteer extraordinaire Duncanπ¦π¨ A fab new landing shelf and a bit of box TLC means itβs officially back in business for another season. Owls approve. Very much so. π¦β¨ @duncanrford.bsky.social @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
