[A screenshot of the Nintendo Australia website flash intro from 1998. A number of official artwork renders are used for the buttons. The Yoshi button is labeled "HELP" and is altered to have smaller pupils than usual.] Source: image: https://web.archive.org/web/19980530120304fw_/http://www.nintendo.com.au/flash_index.html, info: Bluesky user @vghistory.bsky.social
The 1998 official site for Nintendo Australia had a deliberately silly aesthetic with small animations and edits to official renders. For the "HELP" button, Yoshi's pupils were made smaller than usual to give him a "concerned" expression, as though in need of help.
Nomura no Famicom Trade was a stock trading application for the Japan-only dial-up modem add-on for the Famicom. Through a Nintendo collaboration, the game featured Mario on the information screen, doing a unique little dance.
Certain models of the 2003 Motorola MPx200 clamshell phone contained a ringtone that was blatantly just the "Fever" theme from Dr. Mario with different notes.
In WarioWare: Twisted, Jimmy's boss microgame can be won instantly if the console is tilted 720Β° in less than half a second. In practice, this is achieved by literally physically throwing the console.
Most of the footage of the famous 2000 "Super Mario 128" tech demo was recorded with handheld cameras by the audience, with the presenter drowning out the game sound. Only 10 seconds of direct feed footage exist, which reveal that the sound was a cacophony of Marios screaming.
In Super Mario Sunshine, whenever Mario is wet, he will drip small droplets of water. This is not cosmetic; in fact, Wet Mario is so powerful he can defeat the game's first boss entirely by dripping on it, skipping obtaining FLUDD altogether.
Oh, also, some additional/bonus info for Bowbear as well! Wanted to add some of these in here when I was first planning her reference sheet, but I didn't want to overfill the actual sheet, so, I made this.
(hope it makes sense lol)
i think i might be giving her more power with the way I'm talking about her all the time, but, i can't help it she is making me lose my mind and i have nobody left to talk about this to
After a long period of time, Bowbear's reference (for 2026) has finally been made.
I unironically enjoyed making this reference sheet ngl, I can't wait to so much more with this character... or perhaps, maybe I can? I honestly don't know.

"Mushrooms are drugs" jokes are a staple of Mario humor on the Internet. Not even Nintendo themselves are strangers to this, with a comic in the official Japanese Super Mario World guide using "Luigi is consuming mushrooms secretly in the bathroom" as a setup.
"If Super Mario 64 is a makunouchi bento, then Banjo-Kazooie is a deluxe makunouchi bento." -Shigeru Miyamoto, interview in the Famitsu magazine, Issue 490 (May 8, 1998) [picture of a small bento with three compartments alongside box art of Super Mario 64] [picture of a large bento with six compartments alongside box art of Banjo-Kazooie] The two games as foods, according to Miyamoto Source: @m0m0_0ssrr_, x.com/m0m0_0ssrr_/status/1847144999642890416
Shigeru Miyamoto was very impressed by Banjo-Kazooie during its development, even expressing that it surpasses Super Mario 64 in some ways: "If Super Mario 64 is a makunouchi bento, then Banjo-Kazooie is a deluxe makunouchi bento."
Note that Week 4 of BS Super Mario Collection is lost media. Only VHS footage of it exists; the ROM has never been recovered. [Image of Luigi relaxing on a tropical island] [Cutscene seen before final battle against Bowser] [Voice-over, translated roughly from Japanese] To my brother. BS Super Mario Collection was a version of Super Mario All-Stars for the Satellaview, released in 4 episodes. Luigi does not appear in it. However, near the end of the final episode, before the final battle, a letter arrives in which he explains he was sitting out the adventure on a tropical island.
Hey guys. I really wanted to avoid doing this, but due to multiple repeated harassment attempts, lies, and slander against me by this person along with others, as well as many people in general being affected by her, I am releasing an information document defending myself and spreading warning on my ex-friend and previous Xenophanes and Sonic AU VA, Schizo_Chaos-VA. Please be wary of her, her group, and her outwardly predatory and sexual behavior towards everyone, including minors, and her desire to hurt others for her own gain. If you hear anything about me due to them attempting to slander my name, please approach me so I may clear up any misunderstandings. Note the document contains talk of specific fetishes, sexual and predatory behavior, and potentially triggering content for victims of sexual abuse. Read ahead with caution. As of current, do not contact me with questions. I will open the floor for them if needed later when I am more calm. I really didn't want to have to do this.
Important.

In Donkey Kong 64, the Giant Spider miniboss can only be fought once. Modifying the game to fight it a second time makes it unceremoniously explode. While this appears to be a glitch, examining the code reveals it was actually deliberately added for the developers' own amusement.
Super Mario World was shown in early screenshots to have a mushroom-shaped overworld. However, development files show that this concept went much further. The mushroom island eventually connected to a large mainland. It is unknown why such an elaborate overworld was completely scrapped.
In Super Paper Mario, entering 3D mode during the Brobot battle reveals a synthwave-style vector background. Since it can only be seen during the battle, it is impossible to enjoy it by itself, undisturbed by enemy attacks, without external tools.

"Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" is a popular Internet meme about Luigi that started with a video uploaded by YouTube user KlydeStorm in 2009, in which Luigi wins against CPU opponents in Mario Party 2 without performing any inputs. It became so popular that Nintendo's own social media accounts and official videos referenced it. [A post from SuperMario_UK on Twitter] He does nothing. How does he always win? [A subtitle on Nintendo Monthly Rewind-April 2021 on YouTube] But will Luigi win by doing nothing? However, the first instance of Luigi winning while doing absolutely nothing actually comes from Nintendo themselves. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi wins a drama contest while playing grass, a role requiring him to lie down and be silent for the whole play. While it might at first appear that the other actors's performances were responsible for the victory, it turns out that everyone specifically liked Luigi doing absolutely nothing. [Screenshots of PM:TTYD] Hayzee was a producer, and he was looking for actors to go on stage with him. The script was great, but I got really hosed, Bro... My "role"... My "part"... ...Was grass! I played grass by the side of the road! Grass, Bro! Grass! I just sprawled out on the ground and had to be silent. Everyone but me had lines... In the end, our musical was the talk of the town, and we won the Drama Slam. But wow! Outside were tons of fans! MY fans! Fans of grass! They swarmed me! "Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" is a meme started with a fan video in 2009, which got so popular Nintendo themselves referenced it repeatedly. However, the earliest instance of Luigi winning by doing nothing actually comes from a game and predates the meme by 5 years.
Super Mario 64 DS contains a "Surf or Die" glitch. If Yoshi lands on a Koopa shell in a specific way, he will be fine for as long as he keeps surfing. However, the moment he stops surfing, the game will freeze.
"Don't you love what I create for you?" "Don't you love what I create for you?" "Don't you love what I create for you?" "Don't you love what I create for you?" "Don't you love what I create for you?" "Don't you love what I create for you?" (also uh this is that one scene from my gmod vid but slightly edited to be more like what i was going for here)

Transcript: Gotta have game. People don't remember bits and bytes. They remember games. So it's a good thing this little guy is on our side. He's the most recognized video game character in the world. And his spirit has helped us spawn a slew of great games. He is the standard. The bar. The ideal we try to surpass with every game we make. Because systems and technology come and go. But a great game lives forever. Source: pietriots.com/2013/02/23/a-message-from-nintendo-gotta-have-game, grailed.com/listings/28438307
In 2023, I posted about a bizarre Dolce & Gabbana shirt featuring Mario standing in a beam of light alongside text praising him. I have tracked down the source of the image, which was a splash page in the E3 2000 brochure. Now the venerated Mario can be seen in high quality.
"In those days, Miyamoto would come to us at 11 PM, after he finished all of his board-member work, and say, "It's Mario time." At that point, we'd start a planning meeting that would run until 2 AM. At that point, Miyamoto would go home, leaving us with the words, "You should return home soon, for your health." Over the next two or three hours, we'd write the game design documents and summarize the instructions for our artists and programmers. It was the craziest crunch time that I've ever experienced in my development career. But if the God of Games was working so much, could we give up? Miyamoto had incredible stamina." -Motoi Okamoto, Script and Mini-Game Director for Super Mario 64 DS, in a 2017 interview with Chris Kohler from Gamasutra Source: web.archive.org/web/20170405122956/https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/294923/Qamp_A_Design_lessons_learned_from_a_decade_at_Nintendos_EAD.php
According to Motoi Okamoto, Mini-Game Director for Super Mario 64 DS, Shigeru Miyamoto would start midnight crunch sessions for the game's development by walking into the office and announcing "It's Mario time."
The ending to the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels will become corrupted simply by Mario being too close to the right edge of the screen. While Mario will remain normal, Peach will become an uncanny jumble of corrupted graphics.
In Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Starlow bizarrely claims herself to be "an eight-headed beauty". This is actually a mistranslation. She actually refers to eight-head body proportions, used traditionally for fashion illustrations, instead of literally claiming to have 8 heads.
Marriage certificates are often found in customized form in Japanese publications. A bridal magazine published an official Mario/Peach-themed certificate in a 2017 issue. Source: nintendolife.com/news/2017/10/random_theres_a_mario_and_peach_marriage_license_available_in_japan
Official 2017 legally binding Mario/Peach-themed marriage certificate from Japan. Filling out this form and submitting it at the municipal office of residence immediately results in a recognized marriage once processed.

In the Japanese version of Mario Kart World, the "SPECIAL test of skill" missions are named "Even the Mario Kart staff were surprised!", a reference to the name of the Way Cool course from the Special Zone in Super Mario World. This is why the SPECIAL is in all caps in English.

The kiosk demo of Mario Kart DS contained "Flesh Trucks" due to a spelling error. While the error was fixed in the final version, looking at the preview image for GCN Mushroom Bridge very closely shows that the truck still has an L. As such, the memory of the Flesh Truck remains.
Super Mario Bros. 3 contains a bizarre "vengeful Thwomp" glitch. Normally, if a Thwomp is hit by a hammer, it just dies. However, if a diagonal Thwomp is hit in the topmost position, it will perform a jump after dying just to get one last revenge attack in.
The manual for Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman shows an extremely low level of effort regarding Wario illustrations. Despite Bomberman receiving various different drawings, only one artwork of Wario is used, which is repeated 19 times without any alterations.
