Most notably, when I was growing up, I was taught one of the fundamental differences was that Canada chose to be a cultural mosaic (not a melting pot) because we understand diversity makes us stronger.
Indeed… I am Canadian.
Yes, we have our faults and a lot more to do to right the wrongs of our past, but Canada is proudly not the U.S.
I’m not one to wave the flag, but the disrespect and attacks coming from 47 and his people - on Canada, Ukraine, Mexico, Greenland, but also marginalized communities, stirs frustration and anger.
It has also stirred some pride in being Canadian.

On today’s The Sunday Magazine with Piya Chattopadhyay: Cancelling cancel culture: Social activist Loretta Ross on the merits of "calling in" over calling out.
With the world in the state that it is, it’s clear we need more dialogue, not less.
It drives me crazy when I hear calls to defund the CBC from federal MPs, and others who likely don’t even listen to it.
And then I hear a piece and am reminded of the importance & quality of journalism we get from shows like Sunday Magazine, and the need to protect it.

But we’ve seen Trump’s meanness and his affection for bigotry spill across the border, with our own rise in racism, opposition to immigration, and an unashamed push against the rights of LGBTQ+ members of our community.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve long preferred shopping local - supporting local while also trying to reduce my carbon footprint. (I have also supported “buy nothing day,” pushing back at a system that promotes rampant consumerism, which is unsustainable for the finite resources of this planet.)
Recent tariff talk and the response of Canadians has me feeling uneasy.
I worry about us losing our moral compass.
The Proud Boys were the face of political violence in America during Trump's first term. Yesterday he rewarded them for it.
Trump's pardons were a message to his followers:
No consequences for political violence, so long as it's carried out in my name.

The former PM’s response is an intelligent retort with recommendations & important reminders of who we are as Canadians.
It’s also beautiful to see that at 91, not only can one still have their faculties, but be so relevant, heard and respected for their wisdom, gained through the passage of time.
I’ve been concerned that people are focussing on TR***’s ridiculous insults too much & that it’s likely a distraction from something more sinister that he’s planning. Or maybe it’s in preparation to sell us something that seems “at least more palatable.”

I know newsrooms are struggling, but posting a one-sided rewrite of a news release is just wrong. Instead of being concerned about being the 1st to get the story out, there should have been follow-up with those pushing for fish farms to be moved from open water to on land.
