Flying home from a mastermind retreat with my fellow CEOs in NAWBO (National Association of Women’s Business Owners). Felt incredible to get away but ironically the most powerful part of the weekend happened on the shuttle ride to the airport! A fellow CEO gave me the real help I was craving 🥹
I’m thinking a lot about Pope Francis, like we all are. He represented the Catholic social justice teaching of the Preferential Option for the Poor better than I have seen it in my lifetime. I will miss his voice, his laughter, and the modesty of how he held his office. May he rest in peace.
Yesterday was my mother’s birthday. She died on New Year’s Day. I cried more yesterday than in all the weeks since I lost her. Death is so irrevocable and that’s the hardest part to adjust to.

The reason I find Bluesky harder to use is that there’s no post-pub edit function. I rely on that little button. Too much? Maybe. But after having it everywhere else online, it’s tough to go without it here.
I don’t understand how scrubbing websites that showcase our military heroes who are women, people of color or native Americans has anything to do with DEI.

I’m flabbergasted that the party that believes in local schools, homeschooling and school choice is okay with the federal government interfering with local school curriculum choices.
I can’t believe we are the same nation that was terrified of communist expansion. Mind-blown that Putin is so acceptable to the party of Reagan.
Sometimes it’s a better use of our energy to find new ways to think than to try to find the right way to think. 🤔
I’ve been thinking about individual rights versus community values. This seems to be where ee collide in our attempts to undersand each other’s political perspectives. So I wrote about it here:

The word of the hour for me is humane. Whether we are in a customer service line or are teaching our kids to spell, how can we relate to the other person humanely? With care? With regard for their dignity?

The hardest thing about writing a book about writing is my worry that people hate writing so much they won’t want to read about it. I promise you: this book is entertaining and has so much practical help and reassuring stories and a sense of humor! Also, I wrote it. AI did not.

How do we show the option for the poor?
By feeding the hungry
By welcoming strangers
By clothing the naked
By caring for the sick
By visiting those in prison
By sharing and giving away our goods
By helping the poor develop themselves
By speaking for the voiceless
By defending the defenseless
The poor, stranger, orphan, outcast, alien, and foreigner have always been the priority of the Gospel. In Catholic circles, they call this emphasis “The Option for the Poor.”

I’m so tired of the chase for followers and the feeling that the numbers mean something. This last year, I decided to “go small”—focusing on smaller groups in social media and conferences. My life changed! I feel freer to share and more connected. Who knew?
It will take some time to ramp up but that’s also nice. Go slow, go small.
