I spend SO MUCH TIME in the first year, encouraging (urging?!) my students to forget what they learned at A-level. Radical action IS required, but absolutely not the radical action that is suggested here.

Thanks so much to those involved in our panel including @paulakennedy.bsky.social & @sarahfoxhistory.bsky.social!

It was a belter of a session, if I do say so myself π
@benltjackson.bsky.social is such a great speaker, and his research is fascinating. I can't wait to read the book!

Do you know what I really hate about GenAI (beyond the bland hyperbole it churns out)?
It's that when I read a great piece of student work, I am immediately suspicious, then proved right by a quick check of the citations.
Marking is taking 3x longer & is soul destroying

This article led me down a rabbit hole to the OFS report on the financial sustainability of HE which suggests 'optimistic' forecasting in the sector around student numbers. I can't say that I have noticed that sense of 'optimism' on the ground...
With universities making a loss on teaching domestic graduates, and almost half of universities in England facing deficits this year, student loans need to be reviewed as part of a much broader, and urgent, rethink of how UK universities are funded.
The university funding crisis finally starting to make it into newspaper editorials

It's so exciting to see our research so accessible. I am looking forward to letting my students loose on Alexander's interface rather than just demanding that they download a giant spreadsheet

Full time AHRC doctoral studentships now available in Arts & Humanities at University of Hertfordshire for October 2026 start - please do share widely!! This includes both History & Heritage Studies among other subjects ππ www.herts.ac.uk/research/res...
As the academisation project in UK schools starts to fall apart at the seams, it seems the very essence of madness that we would decide to embark on the same process in HE. I think I know how this is going to end...

Incandescent. One of the best pieces I've read about what university means to people and their communities - and what will happen to a city and people after one closes. The *Labour* government and Jaqui Smith in particular should be ashamed of themselves and shamed into doing something. Deplorable.
I keep publishing Open Access which plays havoc with my ALCS payment! π€£
Thank you, I'll have a dig around and see what I can find.
I'll give it a go. Thanks so much!
You make it sound so easy but it hadn't occurred to me! Thanks so much!
Hello #skystorians.
Possibly a silly question, but is there an easy way to find out if our books are being used to teach? And if so, what is it?!
OR if any of you are using my book in your teaching, could you please let me know?
Thank you so much!

It, as always, glorious to start the year immersed in #18thC geekery at #BSECS2026. This panel was on the social & political worlds of male bodies - fascinating, and at once diverse & brilliantly cohesive. I really enjoyed it.
