On #Patriots potential deployment of Doubs. Found this excerpt in @mattharmon.bsky.social's Reception Perception profile of him interesting. A McDaniels offense usually features more static/wider formations. Doubs may be an X in GB, but Z/flanker in NE. receptionperception.com/romeo-doubs-...

Sharing this interesting data point from Fantasy Points Data from last summer/heading into '25. Doubs is a man coverage beater. The #Patriots needed this.

The dream isn't dead.

A source told Karen Guregian that the Patriots haven't stopped their pursuit of A.J. Brown - even after signing Romeo Doubs. www.masslive.com/patriots/202...

Really like Romeo Doubs in New England. Polished route runner, red zone upside, can work the middle, and a good intermediate answer for Drake Maye--ranked 12th league-wide in yds/route run on 10-20 yd throws, tied with....Stefon Diggs. Could see him used in a similar fashion.

Looking forward to digging into his tape and unearthing more details from what I already know. I always liked him in GB. He led the Packers in targets over the last three seasons. Plays more outside, but a clear high-volume/possession receiver Diggs replacement in some ways. WR2.

it's nice to see safeties getting paid for once. in general the non-premium positions (Center, LB, S, RB) are getting a bit more respect

I would like to see five on the 53-man roster in September. So there are two more spots to fill.

Even after landing Jones, expect the Patriots to continue looking for a right side/weak side explosive speed-rusher. Options include re-signing K'Lavon Chaisson, exploring free agency for other fits, or using a Day 1 or Day 2 pick in the draft to fill the role. They'll make another notable move here

Opinion/analysis: On Patriots’ 3-year deal with Dre’Mont Jones, these back to back plays from Ravens-Patriots game in December provide an initial snapshot of Jones’ edge presence (No. 41). High-motor, physical style fits defense. Sparks question on K’Lavon Chaisson’s return.

Massive edge rusher (6-3, 281) who I expect to play mostly on the left side for the #Patriots. Move ahead of Harold Landry, Anfernee Jennings on current depth chart. Jones also played college ball at Ohio State. Expect that trend of Buckeye signings to continue in the Vrabel era.

Things like age, assets will factor into #Patriots WR move decisions, but from a deployment perspective:

Alec Pierce: Deep πŸ’£s, digs

A.J. Brown: May be suited for hybrid Z/X role at this stage. YAC ability, maybe β‰ˆ 30% slot snaps?

Each would see a 2018 Josh Gordon-esque route tree

the '2018 Josh Gordon-esque route tree' is a compliment. Josh McDaniels offense deployments for freak size/skill/talent athletes at 'X' WR spot.

This is my latest projection at the Patriots 2026 cap space number.

As of 4:30PM EST March 4th the Patriots have 62 players signed for the 2026 season. I am taking an educated guess at the adjustment number.

I am projecting LTBE incentives for players on the 2026 roster. For example, Carlton Davis has $2M in playing-time incentives that will be categorized LTBE (Likely to Be Earned) in 2026 since he played over 87% of the snaps in 2025.

Please note both Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte have played enough snaps during their rookie deals to increase their 2026 salary from $1.145M to the projected low RFA tender amount ($3.674M). Please see https://overthecap.com/proven-performance-escalator for more details on the PPE program.

$301,200,000 (Official 2026 League Cap) Plus
$47,274,868 (2025 Carryover) Plus
$5,554,386 (Projected LTBE/NLTBE and Guaranteed Salary Offset Adjustment)
Equals
$357,079,254 (2026 Patriots Projected Adjusted Cap Number) Minus
$979,200 (Off-season Workout Bonus - $340*90 players*32 sessions) Minus
$31,490,382 (Dead Money. 8.8949% of Patriots adjusted cap number)
Minus
$264,478,831 (Total Active Roster Cap Commitments)
Equals
$57,080,841 (Patscap's Projected 2026 Patriots Cap Space Number)

$227,290,563 = Patriots Cash Spending Excluding Unearned Incentives
Patriots Cash Spending to League Cap Ratio = 75.46%

I have the Patriots 2026 effective salary cap space number as $35,700,959 after projecting these future expenses

$3.2M in cap space to sign 2026 draft class.
The $3.2M is just a holder as no one knows now where the Patriots 2026 draft picks will actually be.
$5.25M for Practice Squad players and their elevations
$1,559,882 for earned NLTBE active roster bonuses. Expect this number to increase as players miss games during the 2025 season.
$1.77M for the salaries of players 52 and 53
$7.5M to replace injured players

My latest projection for the Patriots 2026 salary cap space number after accounting for the Stefon Diggs release is $57,080,841 - a $15.795M increase from my last update.

The defending AFC champions now have 62 players on their roster

Stefon Diggs thanks the Patriots. A source says the Patriots have informed him he will be released at the start of the league year. Ties to finances, as cap charge was spiking from $10.5m to $26.5m.

Johnson reunites with Robert Saleh, who wants an explosive 4-man pass rush up front.

Titans drafted Sweat as a space-eating NT for a Ravens-esque defense. Nickel 2-4-5 looks w/ 1-tech/NT complimenting 3T (Simmons), like Jones-Madubuike in BAL. Jets clearly going that route now.

Not that 2-pt stance vs 3-pt stance for Nickel edge rushers definitely declares 3-4 vs 4-3, but it seemed like Packers were already in a 3-4, or at least "multiple" scheme with Hafley, right? Rashan Gary played more in 2-pt stance last season (PFF). So did Van Ness, who is large for an OLB edge.

The beauty of the 2018 playoff run is that it took all of the elements of the Patriots dynasty for one last title trek. There was a heavy amount of defense and I-Form/2003-era running in the AFCD win, first half of AFCCG, Super Bowl. In 2nd half vs Chiefs, Brady had to outduel Mahomes, 2010s style.

Jaelan Phillips among edge defenders (min. 100 snaps) from Weeks 10-18 (traded to PHI), via PFF:

Pash rush win rate – 18.3% (10th of 93)
Hurries - 32 (4th of 93)
Run stops – 11 (3rd of 38)
Run stop % - 8.5% (4th of 38)

The #Patriots statically deployed Landry (90% left) & Chaisson (83% right) on the edge in '25. If Chaisson is re-signed as a 'LEO' speed rusher, NE may have interest in Jaelan Phillips. Size, length, great all around game (edge set vs. run/pass rush), 81% left edge since '22.
