A cryptic and overwhelming film that feels like the work of a mad prophet who has read The Book of Revelation and Green Eggs and Ham too many times. While the haunting visuals are justly lauded, I was even more taken with the sound design, which alternates between sonic assault and painful silence.

One of those flicks where trying to follow the plot is an impediment to enjoyment. Everything else about the movie is fab. The Bava-esque colors. The ornate sets. The dexterity and tireless commitment to the bit of the actors as they fly around on wires and shoot laser beams out of their fingers.
