I agree!
Can you use it in a sentence? π
Book banning is real and is terrorizing teachers, librarians & students from marginalized identities now. It is worse than it has ever been. If youβre remembering your quaint βCelebrate Freedom. Read a Banned Bookβ T-shirt, adjust your perspective. Youβve brought an umbrella to a hurricane.
One of the best things you can do right now is read books. Buy them. Borrow them from the library. Gift them.
Read history. Read fiction. Read science writing. Read anything that shows you the world is bigger than what fascists say it is.
Read to remember why your resistance matters. ππ
I'm in!
Labor, by Amanda Roth. A five column contrapuntal poem.
I might be on a contrapuntal kick right now. Thank you to the kind editors at Hoxie Gorge for giving this piece such a good home!
The whole issue is now live at HoxieGorgeReview.com
Created a starter pack for the insanely talented members of my writing group. Let me know if I missed anyone?

I'd dump all social media right now, but I'd miss the poets so much. π

Would any French-fluent mutuals be up for translating two short sentences from English into French for me? I donβt trust Google. DM if so! π«Ά

He likes stories about portals and robots. Also a big Pokemon fan.
My sci-fi favorites aren't particularly age appropriate for him. Though I also love Star Trek and Doctor Who and have a few ideas of episodes to show him as an intro.
Sci-fi nerds of Bluesky:
Any recommendations for introducing a 9yo to the genre? Books, TV, movies, games are all welcome.
I have a new poem published today at @hfr.bsky.social
"Canβt I have what Iβve been promised? Amen and amen and so forth? I just wanted the hem of your robe. If not, closure."

The Bear By Amanda Roth βWe canβt go over it. We canβt go under it. Oh, no! Weβve got to go through it!β - Michael Rosen I cannot tell my kids that we are on a bear hunt. I can only muster lies by omission: Itβs a beautiful day. Donβt be scared. I show them how to walk through walls of grass. We laugh when it sticks to our hair, but at the river, that deep, cold river, even they begin to see: the world is not a safe place. What kind of mother brings her children to the river?
We are still wet when the forest swallows us whole. Hand in hand we stumble, trip, break our knees open, wash our blood in the snow. * How do I keep them safe? I don't know the way under the dark, wet earth. If I shake the nails loose from my throat, would it be enough to build a bridge? * What kind of mother brings her children to the bear? Shows them how to reach into the dark mouth of its cave, thick with rot and scat and fear? This is the world, I want to say. The nose and fur and teeth of it. This is how we hold our hands out for the world.
Sharing my published pieces from 2024!
First up: The Bear published by @literarymama.bsky.social and inspired my childrens' obsession with the book We're Going on a Bear Hunt.
