“…Canadian military equipment is currently being used in Gaza by the Israeli military, against Venezuelan fishermen by the U.S. military, and in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by federal immigration agents using Canadian-made armored vehicles.”

Canada's attempt at a patriot act is coming back tomorrow, and you know they are gonna use Tumbler Ridge as the excuse for "lawful access". Don't fall for it, it's about counter-insurgency, not "making kids safe again"

No-one's angry. But deleting your post because you rightfully realized that saying "at least it's not Amtrack" is neither helpful nor putting Canada's abysmal passenger rail infrastructure into perspective was probably the right move.

"Canada's public train infrastructure is an utter shambles, and the USA's is worse; both need severe investment" is perspective. "At least you're not taking Amtrack, be happy with what you have" is not.

Stabbing yourself in the chest and then saying "Well, at least I didn't shoot myself!" is not really the best plan.

VIA is absolute trash - even British trains, the archetype of poorly run and overpriced in Europe - are better. Amtrack being garbage has nothing to do with it.

Few remember not only that the origins of March 8 lie in the history of the international workers’ movement, but that it was the socialist movement in the United States that first launched the idea of a day devoted to women’s rights centered on working-class women. In fact, the Socialist Party USA first established a day of education and action around women’s rights called “Woman’s Day” in 1908, and the following year U.S. socialists held demonstrations in several cities to demand women’s suffrage. In 1910, German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed the transformation of the U.S. Woman’s Day into an international day of action—International Working Women’s Day—which, in 1914, started being celebrated on March 8. Three years later, on March 8, 1917, Russian women workers took to the streets in St. Petersburg, organizing a strike to demand bread and peace. It was the beginning of the Russian Revolution."

The basic tools of military action are things that would be horrorific crimes in civilian life. A war crime is an act so egregious that it stands out against that background. Somehow we never have that conversation honestly before we go to war.

The former diplomat Carne Ross observed in September 2015 in The New York Times:[181]

For a former diplomat like me, I found it confusing: I kept looking for a hierarchy, the singular leader, or signs of a government line, when, in fact, there was none; there were just groups. There was none of that stifling obedience to the party, or the obsequious deference to the "big man"—a form of government all too evident just across the borders, in Turkey to the north, and the Kurdish regional government of Iraq to the south. The confident assertiveness of young people was striking.

In March 2017 the "United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria" was unable to find evidence to substantiate claims about ethnic cleansing, stating:

Though allegations of "ethnic cleansing" continued to be received during the period under review, the Commission found no evidence to substantiate claims that YPG or SDF forces ever targeted Arab communities on the basis of ethnicity, nor that YPG cantonal authorities systematically sought to change the demographic composition of territories under their control through the commission of violations directed against any particular ethnic group

God its so funny how hard Turkey+the US tried to do a smear campaign accusing Rojava of authoritarianism and ethnic cleansing to justify attacking them

but then the UN/human rights orgs investigated and are like "...this is a bunch of anarchists who are almost neurotically obsessed with equality"

AI is not inevitable. Nothing in human societies is inevitable because we design them. Healthcare can be free for the public. Books can be bought instead of bombs. Universities can be free for students, and they can even receive a stipend to live off. Don't let companies dictate the future.

Vampiristic. Fascists rarely make art. Instead, the fascist aesthete’s job is to appropriate existing art for the purpose of aestheticizing a political goal. Because fascism relies on the fetishization of the past—whether real or imaginary—nothing truly new can come from fascist art.
Violent. Dehumanization, augmented by technological abstraction—the sublimation of man into machine—creates under fascism an extreme predilection for violence. In Italian Fascism, this role was played by the automobile, as evidenced by the fascination of Futurist artists like Marinetti with car crashes. (Today, AI deepfakes play a similar role.) Fascist aesthetics are ruthlessly hierarchical and their satisfaction is derived from the maintenance of that hierarchy. They are antisocial and rely on shock value.

Good this. I know no-one here needs telling but the more Islam and Muslims can be demystified and shown as what they are, just people going about their day like we all do, the better. If one person with unsavoury views sees this and goes oh right, that’s how it works, that’s fine it’s done its job.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney and Minister Anand on the situation in the Middle East
"The Canadian government is closely following Iran- related hostilities throughout the Middle East and urges all Canadians in Iran to shelter in place. Canadians in the wider region should follow local advice and take all necessary precautions. Canada's position remains clear: the lslamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world's worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons. Canada and our international partners have consistently called upon the Iranian regime to end its nuclear program, including at the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis and with the United Nations' reimposition of sanctions in September. Despite diplomatic efforts, Iran has neither fully dismantled its nuclear program, halted all enrichment activities, nor ended its support for regional terrorist proxy groups. Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against Iran's oppressive regime. Canada has listed the lslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity, and has sanctioned 256 Iranian entities and 222 individuals in response to the regime's repression and its violence both against its own people, and persistently, beyond its borders. Canada reaffirms Israel's right to defend itself and ensure the security of its people.
Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security.
