The fact that my trade union is facing allegations of trade union victimisation against its own workers is so deeply sickening that I find it difficult to put into words. Please read and share this excellent thread and support Unite-UCU in their battle for the sort of treatment UCU demands for us.
This is a thread about UCU & what it has become over the last few years. But the first thing I want to say is I didnβt join a union to stay silent or turn my back on a single parent of three facing dismissal on the basis of their trade union activities. Marie Monaghan is the Unite UCU 1/12

Incandescent. One of the best pieces I've read about what university means to people and their communities - and what will happen to a city and people after one closes. The *Labour* government and Jaqui Smith in particular should be ashamed of themselves and shamed into doing something. Deplorable.

I feel this in the marrow of my bones. The future of a university should be shaped by leaders whose own careers depend materially on the future they are shaping.
The worst thing to happen to academia was the emergence of a nomadic administrative class like the one in corporations who just move from institution to institution setting fires and walking away.
Say what you will about the flaws of faculty governance, but at least they believe in the mission.
There's about a month left to submit something to the Asian Philosophy of Science Association's inaugural conference! Consider submitting an abstract, and encouraging early-career scholars (especially those from or based in Asia) to submit an essay for the APSA Essay Prize.
'Staff at the University of Nottingham are preparing to strike for the second time this term, announcing a further 22 days of action before Christmas, in addition to the 20 days already taken.' Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, Leicester, and Edinburgh also striking.
Just in case anyone is listening, please note that UK universities cannot operate successfully on the basis of continuous reduction of academic staff and academic staff pay. No amount of staff wellness sessions will change this.
We are in full solidarity with the @pcsunion.bsky.social members at the @britishlibrary.bsky.social who will be on strike for the next two weeks. Let's get out to their pickets and rallies to show our support, @ucu.org.uk members! Details below. @pcspress.bsky.social
